Family Card Games | Penny Wize

?

?

Do you ever get the feeling that there?s no such thing as just plain, old fashioned family fun anymore ? without the sound of text messages being typed or the annoying beeping of an email alert?

?

As a parent it can be frustrating to watch helplessly as your kids sit mindlessly in front of the television. But what can you do if you have no suitable places to take them, and no money to spend if you did?

One activity that works well at keeping children entertained is playing good old-fashioned card games. They provide cheap and easy entertainment while engaging different parts of your child?s mind.

Playing games with one?s family is a great way to create lasting bonds and can also be a fun way for children to learn strategy and quick-thinking skills, as well as providing multiple levels of social interaction between players. It also doesn?t hurt that card games offer a little bit of healthy and friendly competition!

With old favourites such as Old Maid or Go Fish, you cannot go wrong with cards. It?s guaranteed that the moment your child hears the crisp sound of a brand new card deck being opened, he or she will be hooked for at least the rest of the day, if not the entire week.

How to play ?Old Maid? ? for 2 to 8 players

?

You will need a standard deck of cards (with one card removed ? usually the Queen of Clubs ? to serve as the ?Old Maid?), or an Old Maid deck.

Shuffle, and deal all the cards. Some players may have more cards than others; this is totally acceptable. The players sort through their cards, making as many pairs as possible and discard them by placing these pairs face-up on the table in front of them. Players cannot discard three of a kind.

Starting with the dealer, each player then takes a turn offering their hands face down to the player on his or her left. That person selects a card and adds it to his or her hand. If the selected card makes a pair with his or her original cards, that player then can discard those cards, face up.

The player who just took a card then offers his or her hand to the person to the left, and so on. A player is allowed to shuffle his or her hand before offering it.

The object of the game is to continue to take cards, discarding pairs, until all players except one have no cards left. That one player left with the lone unmatchable card ? the ?Old Maid? ? loses.
