Iran earthquakes kill 40-50 people: local media

DUBAI (Reuters) - Two strong earthquakes struck northwest Iran on Saturday, killing between 40 and 50 people and injuring 400, Iranian media said.

The Iranian Students' News Agency quoted the head of the government's emergency centre, Gholamreza Masoumi, as announcing the casualty figures.

A local official in the area told ISNA that six villages had been completely destroyed and 60 villages had been 50 to 70 percent destroyed.

The U.S. Geological Survey measured the first quake at 6.4 magnitude and said it struck 60 km (37 miles) northeast of the city of Tabriz at a depth of 9.9 km (6.2 miles). A second quake measuring 6.3 struck 49 km (30 miles) northeast of Tabriz 11 minutes later at a similar depth.

The second quake struck near the town of Varzgan, Fars news agency said. "The quake was so intense that people poured into the streets through fear," it said.

A local provincial official urged people in the region to stay outdoors during the night for fear of aftershocks, according to the official IRNA news agency. By early evening, ISNA said there had been at least 10 aftershocks.

Iran is straddled by several major fault lines and has suffered several devastating earthquakes in recent times, the last which struck the city of Bam in 2003, killing more than 25,000 people.

U.S. warship rescues Iranian mariners from burning vessel

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. guided-missile destroyer rescued 10 Iranian seamen from a burning dhow in the Gulf of Oman and was providing them with medical care while working to coordinate their return home, the U.S. Navy said on Thursday.

Crew members from the USS James E. Williams rescued the mariners on Wednesday after they were forced to abandon their burning vessel. The dhow was flying an Iranian flag and all the crew members said they were Iranian, the Navy said.

The Iranian seamen were receiving medical treatment aboard the destroyer while awaiting transfer to the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, which was coordinating their repatriation, the Navy said.

U.S. warships have rendered aid to Iranian mariners in the region on several different occasions over the past year, despite escalating tensions over Tehran's nuclear program and sometimes threatening rhetoric between the two countries.

The USS John C. Stennis aircraft carrier strike group rescued 13 Iranian fishermen in January who had been held hostage by suspected Somali pirates for more than a month.

That rescue happened just days after Iran warned the carrier not to return the Gulf. U.S. carriers have entered and departed the Gulf since then without incident.

The United States has led an international effort to impose ever tighter sanctions on Iran over its nuclear enrichment program, which Washington believes is for weapons purposes but Tehran insists is for energy.

Gazan hopes of new horizons hit by Egypt killings

GAZA (Reuters) - Stranded at home and abroad, short of fuel and worried about going hungry, this is not what Gazans expected when Islamist leader Mohammed Mursi was elected president of Egypt in June.

Egypt closed their only passenger crossing into the Gaza Strip and has moved to seal myriad smuggling tunnels connecting the two territories after unidentified militants killed 16 Egyptian policemen in neighboring Sinai on Sunday.

Gaza's Islamist rulers Hamas have ruled out suggestions in the Egyptian media that Palestinian gunmen took part in the Sinai massacre, and have criticized Cairo for imposing "collective punishment" on the impoverished coastal enclave.

But with Egypt showing no sign of relenting, thousands of ordinary Palestinians have found themselves stranded during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, while traders warn of shortages if the tunnels stay stoppered.

"We had high hopes of being able to travel more freely and we actually noticed an improvement in treatment when we crossed into Egypt," said Tareq Al-Husary, 32, a painter from Gaza who is on a pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia with his sick mother. "Now we are marooned out of Gaza," he said, speaking by telephone.

Home to 1.7 million, Gaza has been under tight embargo since Hamas took control in 2007. Hamas is deeply hostile to Israel, and former Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak helped impose the embargo to peg back the Islamist allies of his domestic foes.

Since Mubarak's downfall last year, Egypt eased restrictions on the passage of travelers through the Rafah crossing -- the only window on the world for the vast majority of Gazans, with Israel refusing exit visas for all but exceptional cases.

The abrupt closure of Rafah, which normally sees some 800 people a day leave for Egypt and beyond, left many visiting Palestinians fearful for their overseas jobs, while others worried their visas might expire before they could be used.

"I still hope to be able to make it back to Dubai before August 15th to catch my job," said Heyam Al-Kurdi, who teaches in Dubai and came to Gaza for the wedding of her daughter.

EYEING THE TUNNELS

The shutdown at Rafah has so far prevented 3,000 Gazans from heading to Saudi Arabia for "umrah", the minor pilgrimage believed to bring greater merit if carried out during Ramadan. That has left them and their travel agents facing losses of some $4 million for pre-paid accommodation, transport and visa fees.

"The closure of the crossing is a disaster for tourism companies," said Eid Hnaif, who works for a Gazan travel firm.

Anxious to show how seriously it took the Sinai killings, Hamas leaders ordered the closure of the smuggling tunnels on Sunday to prevent any of those involved from sneaking into Gaza.

Egypt has long turned a blind eye to the illicit, underground trade, so news on Tuesday that it had deployed heavy machinery to destroy the tunnels, which bring in everything from food to fuel and building materials, caused deep concern.

Palestinians said so far, the shafts to just a few "secondary" tunnels had been put out of action. However, Abu Awni, a tunnel owner, said Egyptian officials were also trying to find out what went through the main tunnels and had deployed four or five soldiers to various entrance points.

Although Israel has relaxed its trade embargo, introduced to prevent arms or weapons-making equipment to militants, many Gazans prefer to buy cheaper goods smuggled from Egypt.

"Eighty percent of food materials in the markets of Gaza come from Egypt. What comes from Israel is not enough at all," said Abu Awni, whose 40 employees were idling at home.

Long lines built at petrol stations across Gaza on Monday as news broke that the tunnels were blocked. Two days later some pumps had already run dry, even though Palestinians said at least two fuel pipes to Egypt were still functioning.

But Abu Awni predicted that the Egyptians would not be able to close the tunnels, believed to number some 1,000, for long.

"Unless they create other crossings for trade, we will open five tunnels for each tunnel they close. They cannot just leave our people to starve," he said.

Early human ancestors had more variable diet

ScienceDaily (Aug. 8, 2012) ? New research sheds more light on the diet and home ranges of early hominins belonging to three different genera, notably Australopithecus, Paranthropus and Homo -- that were discovered at sites such as Sterkfontein, Swartkrans and Kromdraai in the Cradle of Humankind, about 50 kilometres from Johannesburg. Australopithecus existed before the other two genera evolved about 2 million years ago.

Scientists conducted an analysis of the fossil teeth, indicating that Australopithecus, a predecessor of early Homo, had a more varied diet than early Homo. Its diet was also more variable than the diet of another distant human relative known as Paranthropus.

An international team of researchers, including Professor Francis Thackeray, Director of the Institute for Human Evolution at Wits University, will be publishing their latest research on what our early ancestors ate, online in the journal, Nature, on August 8, 2012. The paper titled 'Evidence for diet but not landscape use in South African early hominins' was authored by Vincent Balter from the Ecole Normale Sup?rieure in Lyon, France; Jose? Braga from the Universit? de Toulouse Paul Sabatier in Toulouse in France; Philippe Te?louk from the Ecole Normale Sup?rieure in Lyon in France; and Thackeray from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg in South Africa.

According to Thackeray, the results of the study show that Paranthropus had a primarily herbivorous-like diet, while Homo included a greater consumption of meat.

Signatures of essential chemical elements have been found in trace amounts in the tooth enamel of the three fossils genera, and the results are indicators of what South African hominins ate and what their habitat preferences were.

Strontium and barium levels in organic tissues, including teeth, decrease in animals higher in the food chain. The scientists used a laser ablation device, which allowed them to sample very small quantities of fossil material for analysis. Since the laser beam was pointed along the growth prisms of dental enamel, it was possible to reconstruct the dietary changes for each hominin individual.

Thackeray states that the greater consumption of meat in the diet of early forms of Homo could have contributed to the increase in brain size in this genus.

Australopithecus probably ate both meat and the leaves and fruits of woody plants. The composition of this diet may have varied seasonally.

Apart from the dietary differences, the new results indicate that the home-range area was of similar size for species of the three hominin genera.

The scientists have also measured the strontium isotope composition of dental enamel. Strontium isotope compositions are free of dietary effects but are characteristic of the geological substrate on which the animals lived.

According to the results all the hominids lived in the same general area, not far from the caves where their bones and teeth are found today.

Professor Vincent Balter of the Geological Laboratory of Lyon in France, suggests that up until two millions years ago in South Africa, the Australopithecines were generalists, but gave up their broad niche to Paranthropus and Homo, both being more specialised than their common ancestor.

3 Olympic Tips to Train Your Business for the Gold | Business 2 ...

One of my best friends, Sean Furey, is representing the U.S. in javelin this year in London. His dream is finally being realized after years of preparation, training, injury and setbacks, rehab, and of course, personal bests along the way. He had to earn his spot on the team, just like every other Olympian.

To win a gold medal, or to simply compete in the Olympics, is a dream that drives athletes to sacrifice and compete at an elite level that most people aren?t willing to do ? yet there?s no money! Last time I checked, you can?t retire on a gold medal.

So why don?t more business owners compete like Olympians in their businesses when success is financial freedom? Here are 3 ways to apply winning Olympic principles to our everyday business regimen:

#1: Prepare

Bob Knight, one of the most successful basketball coaches of all time, said, ?The key is not the ?will to win??everybody has that. It is the will to prepare to win that is important.? That?s true with all sports and it?s true in business as well. Preparation is the first step if you want to succeed in just about anything.

Unfortunately, preparation is where we will spend a lot of our time. Success, whether it?s winning a race or finally retiring with all the money you could ever need, will be just a blip on your timeline. So it?s important to embrace the journey and try to enjoy the ride. For the past 8 years, my friend Sean was competing in untelevised track meets, with only a few friends and family members in the crowd cheering. But those small meets prepared him mentally and physically for the big stage in London.

In business, preparation is primarily strategic planning, but it also includes competitive analysis, learning, hiring, establishing partnerships and all other activities that move the business closer to your ultimate goal.

Most business owners do not spend nearly enough time preparing and planning for success. In fact, many do not even define and write down what success would look like. Instead, we tend to get caught up in the day-to-day tasks that don?t push the business forward. Take some time to think through your ultimate goal; then write down the key milestones you need to achieve to hit your goal, and document your strategic plan for the next 3 to 5 years. Don?t worry about getting this perfect. You?ll continually adjust your plan based on real-world results, just like Sean tweaked his form to add several meters to his javelin throws.

#2: Execute

If you?ve invested time in preparation, then execution should be the easy part. Think back to elementary school when you studied and were actually prepared for a quiz. The hard part was studying. The quiz was a breeze, right?

That?s how it should be in your business as well. Execute on the steps outlined in your strategic plan. Like an athlete at the Olympics, leave the fear of failure behind ? if you don?t, it may become what actually leads to you to under-perform during the qualifying round or unintentionally give up your spot on the podium during the finals.

#3: Review and Refine

The final step is to review your results and refine your plan based on successful and failed attempts to grow your business. Like preparation, this step is often overlooked because, frankly, it?s difficult. Reviewing poor results and facing reality can be painful, but it?s critical to learn from failure as quickly as possible so you can change course and get back on track.

Athletes study every little detail of their competitors to isolate weaknesses and find ways to perfect their form. They then circle back to step #1 and prepare for the next chance to compete and improve.

As a business owner, you too must carefully review every important metric in your business. Then, based on test results, revise your strategic plan and return to the preparation phase with your newfound knowledge. This cycle should repeat continuously as you steadily and systematically improve your business.

Remember, execution is typically the easy part in this process. To compete like an Olympian requires much more preparation, planning, and refining than the average business owner is willing to do. It?s hard work, but if you put in the necessary time and effort, then you will eventually reach your goal.
