Rescuers struggle to reach China quake zone as toll climbs

By Michael Martina and Maxim Duncan

LUSHAN, China (Reuters) - Rescuers struggled to reach a remote, rural corner of southwestern China on Sunday as the toll of the dead and missing from the country's worst earthquake in three years climbed to 208 with almost 1,000 serious injuries.

The 6.6 magnitude quake struck in Lushan county, near the city of Ya'an in the southwestern province of Sichuan, close to where a devastating 7.9 quake hit in May 2008, killing 70,000.

Most of the deaths were concentrated in Lushan, a short drive up the valley from Ya'an, but rescuers' progress was hampered by the narrowness of the road and landslides, as well as government controls restricting access to avoid traffic jams.

"The Lushan county center is getting back to normal, but the need is still considerable in terms of shelter and materials," said Kevin Xia of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

"Supplies have had difficulty getting into the region because of the traffic jams. Most of our supplies are still on the way."

In Ya'an, relief workers from across China expressed frustration with gaining access to Lushan and the villages beyond, up in the mountains.

"We're in a hurry. There are people that need help and we have supplies in the back (of the car)," said one man from the Shandong Province Earthquake Emergency Response Team, who declined to give his name.

The Ministry of Civil Affairs put the number of dead at 184 and missing at 24, with more than 11,800 injured.

Hundreds of armed police were blocked from using roads that were wrecked by landslides and marched in single file with shovels en route to Baoxing, one of the hardest hit areas. Xinhua news agency said 18,000 troops were in the area.

The Foreign Ministry thanked foreign governments for offers of help, but said the country was able to cope.

In Lushan, doctors and nurses tended to people in the open or under tents in the grounds of the main hospital, surrounded by shattered glass, plaster and concrete. Water and electricity were cut off by the quake, but the spring weather is warm.

"I was scared. I've never seen an earthquake this big before," said farmer Chen Tianxiong, 37, lying on a stretcher between tents, his family looking on.

In another tent, Zhou Lin sat tending to his wife and three-day-old son who were evacuated from a Lushan hospital soon after the quake struck on Saturday.

"I was worried the child or his mother would be hurt. The buildings were all shaking. I was extremely scared. But now I don't feel afraid any more," said Zhou, looking at his child who was wrapped in a blanket on a makeshift bed.

Premier Li Keqiang flew into the disaster zone by helicopter to comfort the injured and displaced, chatting to rescuers and clambering over rubble.

"Treat and heal your wounds with peace of mind," Xinhua quoted Li as telling patients at a hospital. "The government will take care of all the costs for those severely wounded."

Chen Yong, the vice director of the Ya'an city government earthquake response office, told reporters on Saturday that the death toll was unlikely to rise dramatically.

Already poor, many of the earthquake victims said the government was their only hope.

Cao Bangying, 36, whose family had set up mattresses and makeshift cots under a dump truck, said her house had been destroyed.

"Being without a home while having a child of this age is difficult," Cao said, cradling her nine-month-old baby. "We can only rely on the government to help us."

No schools had collapsed, unlike in 2008 when many poorly constructed schools crumpled causing huge public anger, prompting a nationwide campaign of re-building.

Ya'an is a city of 1.5 million people and is considered one of the birthplaces of Chinese tea culture. It is also the home to one of China's main centers for protecting the giant panda.

Futurama gets canceled a second time, finale to air on September 4th

DNP Futurama gets cancelled a second time, finale to air on September 4 2013

Bad news, everyone. Five years into Futurama's revived presence on Comedy Central, the animated sci-fi series is getting the boot for the second time in its long and tumultuous history. Long-time fans will remember the first series finale ("The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings") on Fox in 2003, the show's brief rerun stint on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, the foray into four direct-to-DVD movies (which were separated into sixteen episodes for its inaugural season on Comedy Central) and its eventual deal with the cable network that brought us South Park and The Daily Show. But it seems even after stunts like playing on our gadget obsessions and coming up with a brand new mathematical theorem, the fine folks over at Planet Express just couldn't slake Viacom's thirst for viewers. So, with a heavy heart, we await the series finale (dubbed "Meanwhile") to air on September 4th. But hey, maybe someone can convince Netflix to give life to yet another brilliant-but-canceled series?

Update: To check out a preview of the show's final season -- to debut on June 19th -- take a peek at the second video after the break.

Gilberto Gil takes roadtrip to find musical origins in "Viramundo"

By Stephanie Nebehay

NYON, Switzerland (Reuters) - Noted Brazilian musician Gilberto Gil, who says that struggle has been a counterpoint to his successful musical life, takes a road trip in the film "Viramundo" to seek out his musical origins in Brazil, Africa and Australia.

The documentary by Swiss filmmaker Pierre-Yves Borgeaud, which uses the lens of indigenous communities struggling to preserve their cultural identity after colonial rule, premiered on Saturday night at the "Visions du Reel", an international documentary festival in Nyon, Switzerland.

"Through musical encounters we were looking at the links between countries and their peoples who were submitted to domination and colonization, that was the case of Brazil, Australia and South Africa," Gil told a group of reporters prior to a sold-out screening at the festival.

In the film, producer Emmanuel Getaz accompanies Gil and his faithful percussionist, Gustavo Di Dalva, across the southern hemisphere, from Brazil's Bahia to Australia's Northern Territories and South Africa before returning to the Amazon.

It opens in Salvador where the slim Gil was born, 70 years ago. Dressed in the traditional and blue costume of the Filhos de Gandhi performers, he takes part in the pulsating Carnival.

He then flies to Sydney, where he meets Peter Garrett, Australia's education minister and a former lead singer in the rock band Midnight Oil. Gil reminisces about keeping up his music while serving as culture minister under former Brazilian president Luiz Lula da Silva from 2003-2008.

The next stop is a community centre in Redfern, an inner-city suburb of Sydney, where Aboriginal Patrick Dodson says, "There was never any recognition of our unique culture. The aim of Christianity and Westernisation was so that nothing remained of who we are as Aboriginal people."

Gil empathizes due to his experience, though he notes there has been some progress.

"In my country where black people were brought as slaves, they suffered and were humiliated and separated and whatever bad thing you can think of," Gil told Dodson. "Time passed and things changed. And now we can have a black minister."

The musical journey continues to Johannesburg, South Africa, where a young black trumpet player in the slum of Soweto is juxtaposed with a white woman violinist living in a gated house.

Both young musicians play in the racially mixed Miagi orchestra, but their personal stories take a backseat to a performance with Gil and South African activist and singer Vusi Mahlasela.

The two men perform a beautiful duet of "Tempo Rei", and Mahlasela then sings "Say Africa", explaining the Zulu concept of "ubuntu", which he translates as "a person is a person because of other persons."

The last leg of the odyssey is set in heavily indigenous city of Sao Gabriel da Cachoeira, Brazil. Here, a singer who describes herself as half Brazilian and half Indian sings the final, moving song about the degradation of the Amazon's fragile environment.

Gil sees his difficulties as a driving force in his life.

"Since my adolescence, I've been an activist in politics and the social struggle," he told the film's audience. "I got involved in the movement against the military dictatorship and was imprisoned for three months and expelled. Struggle is also an essential part of my story, an element of enthusiasm and an engine."

The film will open in France and Switzerland in early May, and expand in Europe as well as Brazil, South Africa, and the United States later this year.

(AP) ? A letter that scientist Francis Crick wrote to his son about his Nobel Prize-winning DNA discovery was sold to anonymous buyer at a New York City auction on Wednesday for a record-breaking $5.3 million.

The price, which far exceeded the $1 million pre-sale estimate, topped $6 million when the commission is included, according to Christie's. The price was a record for a letter sold at auction, Christie's said, eclipsing an Abraham Lincoln letter that sold in April 2008 for $3.4 million including commission.

On Thursday, the molecular biologist's 1962 Nobel Prize medal in physiology or medicine will be offered by Heritage Auctions, which estimates it could fetch over $500,000.

The items are among a dozen artifacts Crick's heirs are selling to benefit scientific research.

In the March 19, 1953, handwritten letter to his 12-year-old son, Michael, Crick describes his discovery of the structure of DNA as something "beautiful." The note tells his son how he and James Watson found the copying mechanism "by which life comes from life." It includes a simple sketch of DNA's double helix structure, which Crick concedes he can't draw very well.

The seven-page letter, written to his son in boarding school, concludes: "Read this carefully so that you will understand it. When you come home we will show you the model. Lots of love, Daddy."

Crick, who died in 2004 at age 88, was awarded the Nobel Prize along with Watson and Maurice Wilkins. He spent the latter decades of his career doing brain research at the Salk Institute, where he became a professor in 1977.

Michael Crick's daughter Kindra said the family decided to sell the medal and other items because they had been in storage for 50 years, first locked up in a room of her grandfather's La Jolla, Calif., home and later in a safe deposit box.

They chose to sell them now because it "coincides with the 60th anniversary of the historic discovery and 50 years since he received the award," she said.

Half the proceeds from the Christie's sale will benefit the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, the granddaughter said. Twenty percent of the proceeds from the Heritage Auctions sale will go to the new Francis Crick Institute in London, a medical research institute slated to open in 2015.

Michael Crick, who was in New York to attend the auctions with his daughter, told The Associated Press that the family hoped the prospective buyers "will give people the opportunity to look at them and that they will be an inspiration for future scientists."

The 1962 medal being sold Thursday was struck in 23-karat gold. One side features the Genius of Medicine holding an open book in her lap, collecting water pouring out of a rock to quench the thirst of a sick girl beside her.

It is being offered with his Nobel diploma, a handsome two-page vellum document that contains an original hand-colored picture of a long-haired youth in a blue tunic holding the Rod of Asclepius.

Dallas-based Heritage Auctions said it is only the second time that a Nobel medal has been offered at a public auction. The first was Niels Bohr's 1922 Nobel in Physics that sold in November for about $50,000, said Sandra Palomino, director of its historical manuscripts.

The late William Faulkner's 1950 Nobel Prize for Literature is heading for auction at Sotheby's in June.

Other items in the Heritage sale include Crick's endorsed Nobel Prize check in the amount of 85,739,88 Swedish krona, dated Dec. 10, 1962, and a white lab coat complete with stains and wear.

HP's chairman steps down, 2 directors to depart

(AP) ? Hewlett-Packard Co. Chairman Ray Lane is stepping down and two other board members are leaving in a shake-up spurred by disgruntled stockholders stung by the personal computer maker's downfall.

The housecleaning announced Thursday comes just two weeks after HP barely rebuffed a shareholder rebellion aimed at Lane, the company's chairman since November 2010, and John Hammergren and G. Kennedy Thompson, the two longest serving members on the board.

Although he is relinquishing the chairman's role, Lane will remain on HP's board. He will be replaced on an interim basis by Ralph Whitworth, a shareholder activist who has been on the board for less than 18 months. Whitworth, whose firm owns 34.5 million HP shares, hinted the board would be overhauled under questioning from testy shareholders during the company's March 20 annual meeting.

Hammergren, the CEO of pharmaceutical drug distributor McKesson Corp., and Thompson, the former CEO of troubled bank Wachovia Corp., will depart after HP's board meeting next month. Their exodus means none of HP's directors will have been on the board for longer than four years. Hammergren joined the board in 2005 and Thompson was appointed in 2006.

HP intends to name two new directors to replace Hammergren and Kennedy by the end of this year. Until then, HP will have nine directors on its board.

During last month's shareholder meeting, Lane's re-election as a director was backed by just 59 percent of the vote compared with 96 percent for Ralph Whitworth.

Hammergren's re-election was opposed by 46 percent of the votes while Thompson was rejected on 45 percent of the ballots.

CtW Investment Group, an HP shareholder at the forefront of the rebellion, applauded Thursday's fallout. "Shareholders stand ready to assist the board in bringing in effective, independent directors to help restore this icon of U.S. innovation," Dieter Waizenegget, CtW's executive director, said in a statement.

Shareholders had targeted Hammergren and Thompson for removal primarily because their roles on the board gave them oversight over HP's acquisition strategy. Most of the company's major deals in recent years have gone badly, saddling HP with losses of more than $17 billion since 2010.

The most vexing of the bunch has been Autonomy, a business software maker bought for $10 billion in 2011. Late last year, HP alleged it uncovered financial chicanery within Autonomy that the company says drove up the acquisition price by at least $5 billion.

Autonomy's former CEO Mike Lynch, who was fired from HP last year, has vehemently denied the allegations. The claims are under investigation by the U.S. Justice Department and financial fraud authorities in the U.K., according to HP. At least 12 lawsuits revolving around the handling of the Autonomy deal have been filed against HP.

Lane, a former Oracle Corp. executive turned venture capitalist, also has been blamed for the botched acquisitions. He also was closely aligned with former HP CEO Leo Apotheker, who was fired in more than 17 months ago. The Palo Alto, Calif. company is now being run by Meg Whitman, who is hoping to engineer a turnaround within the next two to three years.

"After reflecting on the stockholder vote last month, I've decided to step down as executive chairman to reduce any distraction from HP's ongoing turnaround," Lane, 66, said in a statement.

Beyond its troubled acquisitions, most of HP's other woes stem from a decline in PC sales as more technology spending shifts to smartphones and tablet computers. The upheaval has caused HP's revenue to fall from the previous year in six consecutive quarters. To offset the drop-off in PC sales, Whitman has cut about 15,300 jobs in the past year and is still planning to eliminate about 14,000 more positions.

HP's woes have cut the company's market value in half in less than three years, wiping out $45 billion in shareholder wealth. The damage would be even worse, if HP's stock had not rebounded during the past two months on hopes that Whitman has the company headed in the right direction. The stock rose 39 cents to close at $22.30 Thursday before the board changes were disclosed.

In an open letter Thursday, Whitworth, told HP shareholders, "there is palpable energy and excitement at every level of the company to get our business turned around." He pledged to find a "world-class" chairman to replace him.

Solar Panels Are Finally Generating More Energy Than They Use

You want an inconvenient truth? Here?s one: Despite the exponential growth of solar energy over the past 13 years, the global production of photovoltaic panels has consumed more electricity than the panels themselves generate, according to a new Stanford University study.

As recently as 2008, the photovoltaic (PV) industry used 75% more energy than it generated (paywall), found the paper published in the journal Environmental Science and Geology.?

Such figures, of course, could prove highly problematic for an industry whose existence is predicated on reducing greenhouse gas emissions by supplying carbon-free electricity.

Now for the good news. There?s more than a 50% chance that the industry reached a tipping point last year and is now producing more electricity than it consumes. By 2020, it should have paid back all the power it consumed since 2000, according to the analysis conducted by Stanford researchers Michael Dale and Sally Benson. ?Developing new technologies with lower energy requirements will allow us to grow the industry at a faster rate,? Benson said in statement.

The solar industry?s energy deficit was a natural consequence of the rapid expansion of photovoltaic power in the first decade of the 21st century. Installed worldwide solar capacity grew on an average of 40% a year, expanding from 1,200 megawatts in 2000 to 22,900 megawatts in 2010.?

By 2012, the cumulative amount of electricity generated by those hundreds of millions of solar panels probably began outstripping the energy embedded in their production. As long as the panels continue to function for their 25-year-life span, that energy surplus will continue to accumulate.?

Whew.

Ross apologizes for lyrics deemed pro-rape

NEW YORK (AP) ? Rick Ross has formally apologized for lyrics some have called pro-rape.

Thursday's apology ? in the form of a tweet ? came the same day a women's group, UltraViolet, planned a protest outside of one of his sponsors, Reebok, in Manhattan.

In Rocko's song "U.O.E.N.O," Ross raps about giving a woman the drug MDMA, known as Molly, and having his way with her. The song was released in January but just recently began getting widespread notice.

Although last week Ross said his lyrics were misinterpreted, he tweeted Thursday that he doesn't condone rape and apologized for lyrics that were "interpreted as rape."

He also offered "apologies to my many business partners, who would never promote violence against women," specifically mentioning Reebok and UltraViolet.

Miller Heiman Releases 2013 Study Results on the Best Practi

02 Apr, 2013

RENO, Nev., April 2, 2013 /PRNewswire/ ? ;The Miller Heiman Research Institute released today the results of the tenth annual Miller Heiman Sales Best Practices Study, the largest global study of selling and sales management best practices in complex, business-to-business selling environments.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20110310/LA62494LOGO)

?Sales leaders have a unique and valuable resource available to them as a result of this study,? said Sam Reese, CEO, Miller Heiman. ?We conduct this research annually to help sales leaders make more informed decisions about where to focus their time and resources in the pursuit of world-class performance.?

The study defined an exclusive group who outperformed in customer management activities and organizational efforts such as operations and management execution. Representing less than five percent of the study participants, this group ? referred to as World-Class Sales Organizations ? outperformed in several key metrics when compared to other study participants including qualified lead volume, new customer acquisition, average account billing, quota achievement, and revenue growth.

Miller Heiman?s annual study seeks to understand what makes an organization successful from year to year. The latest results came from data collected globally during the fall of 2012 and included more than 1,100 professionals at companies in complex selling environments regarding the sales activities and performance practices in their organizations.

?The consistency of the activities we?ve been studying over the past 10 years, plus our exclusive focus on the complex selling space, is unmatched,? said Joe Galvin, Chief Research Officer, Miller Heiman Research Institute. ?This data allows us to provide a depth of information that is just not available anywhere else.?

Three defining attributes of World-Class Sales Organizations emerged from this year?s analysis.

  1. Customer Core: World-Class Sales Organizations have the customer at the core of everything they do.
  2. Collaborative Culture: World-Class Sales Organizations are able to function as a team.
  3. Calibrated Success: ;World-Class Sales Organizations know why they are successful.

According to Galvin, these attributes are consistent with the strategic imperatives that many sales leaders will be focused on solving throughout 2013. The study findings confirm that World-Class Sales Organizations are achieving significantly better growth compared to their peers across the measurements included in the study.

Additional new data emerging from the 2013 study includes insights and benchmark data to help sales leaders measure the practices within their organizations ;against others:

  • Trends in CRM data confidence among sales management
  • Performance effect of time spent with customers
  • Common activities that keep salespeople from spending adequate time with customers
  • Productivity data of World-Class Sales Organizations
  • Priorities of sales management where time spent is most valued
  • Percentage of organizations that share the results of customer satisfaction/loyalty programs with customers and with internal departments
  • Year-over-year change in the need to significantly discount in order to win business
  • Average number of organizations that leverage the best practices of ; top performers to improve others

To schedule an interview regarding the findings, contact the Miller Heiman Research Institute at research@millerheiman.com.

Transporter

Do you store work files on Dropbox?so that you can still access them when you are not at the office? Do you use various cloud storage services so that you can share personal files, images, and videos with friends and family? For end-users and businesses worried about security and privacy on these third-party services, Transporter from Connected Data may be the exact private offline yet online storage they are looking for. Part network-attached-storage and part cloud storage, Transporter offers users remote access to data stored on its drives.

Users on the same network as the Transporter can take advantage of Gigabit Ethernet speeds to access the files. If the Transporter is on a remote network, then the user is restricted to that network's upload and download speeds, but that isn't any different from what you would have with a cloud service. The Transporter is better than a NAS, though, because you can access the Transporter files from anywhere in the world, so long as you have an Internet connection.

However, the key feature for the Transporter isn't its remote access functionality, but the fact that it can communicate with other Transporters. The Transporter maps to a drive on your computer that you can directly navigate to. The desktop management software, Connected Desktop, lets you switch between Transporters and different files. When you want to share your files, you send an invitation asking the recipient to register an account.

What It Looks Like
The Transporter is a stylish, not-quite-obelisk-shaped black box, measuring about 3.9 inches x 3.9 inches x 5.52 inches. The case ?looks more like a fancy paperweight or conversation piece for the coffee table than a network-attached-storage device. Weighing less than 2 pounds, the Transporter is very easy to move around.?

A Gigabit Ethernet port and a USB port are built into the base of the unit, and a colored light indicates the Transporter's status. Reddish yellow indicates a problem, such as low disk space or no Internet connection, greenish-blue is normal operation, and flashing blue means it is transferring data.?

Users can buy the Transporter with a 1TB hard drive ($299), with a 2TB hard drive ($399), or without any hard drive at all ($199). The Transporter can take almost any 2.5-inch SATA hard disk drive, including SATA II, SATA-300, SATA 3Gb/s, SATA III, SATA-600, and SATA 6Gb/s drives, as long as it is 160 GB or larger. Users can decide exactly how much storage capacity they need and swap out for larger drives as necessary.

Unlike many of the popular NAS products on the market, the Transporter has only one drive bay, so there is no way to aggregate storage capacity together in a RAID configuration. In this case, the Transporter is more like an external hard drive that happens to be on the network than a true NAS.

However, unlike an external drive, the Transporter can back up its data on another Transporter and restrict who has access to the files. Transporter can store and transfer videos, pictures, documents, and spreadsheets to other Transporters, other computers (with the Connected Desktop management software installed), and iOS devices.

Getting Started
Connected Data sent me two Transporters, each one with 1 TB hard drive inside. I plugged the Transporter (from now on to be referred to as the "lab unit") into one of PC Mag'stest networks and created an account on the Transporter Website. Once I registered for an account, I was able to "claim" the Transporter based on the device's serial number. This associated the Transporter with my account.

I set up the second Transporter (the "remote unit") on a different network. At this point, I logged back into my account and claimed the second Transporter as well. I could see both Transporters via Connected Desktop. If a friend had yet another Transporter and granted me access on some of the files on that unit, I would have seen that Transporter listed as well.

As part of the setup process, I installed the Connect Desktop software on my test computer. This is the actual software that allows me to browse the files stored on any of the Transporters I have access to. The software works on Mac OS X 10.7.x and 10.8.x, Windows 7 SP1 for both 32-bit and 64-bit versions, and Windows 8 for both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. While there is an app for iOS versions 5.1.x ?and higher, an Android app is not yet available.

When I want to transfer files or share with other people, I send an invitation through the interface to the user's email address. That person registers for an account, installs the software, and that's it.

Transporting the Data
The people you want to share your files with also use Connected Desktop to access the data, even if they aren't on your network.?Next: Accessing the Data on the Transporter
