Penn State is reportedly poised to introduce New England Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O?Brien as its new head coach, leaning on the veteran assistant coach at the NFL and college level to lead the Nittany Lions out of the darkest era in the program?s history.

ESPN.com?s Chris Mortensen was the first to report the news citing anonymous sources. CBSSports.com also reported O?Brien?s plans to accept the head coaching position. The New York Times reported O?Brien met with Penn State officials about the head coaching job Thursday, taking a major step forward in the search process. Some media outlets have reported for more than a week that O?Brien?s move to Penn State was a done deal, but those reports were premature and it appears O?Brien didn?t make a final decision until Thursday.

It was long thought Penn State would pluck a member of the vast Paterno coaching family tree to take over the program when the legendary coach and college football all-time wins leader finally retired, but the past three months have dramatically altered every aspect of the Nittany Lions program. O?Brien?s sole apparent connection to Paterno seems to be that they both graduated from Brown. O?Brien, 42, has had a relatively low profile as a Patriots assistant coach who has worked closely with Tom Brady since joining the New England staff in 2007.

O?Brien worked closely with current UCF coach George O?Leary when O?Leary was the head coach at Georgia Tech. O?Brien was an offensive graduate assistant, running backs coach, quarterbacks coach and offensive coorrindator at Georgia Tech. He worked at the school from 1995-2002. O?Brien spent two seasons as running backs coach at Maryland and two seasons as the offensive coordinator at Duke before joining the Patriots staff.
