Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones have been dealing with his cancer and her depression.

While Catherine Zeta-Jones? struggle with bipolar disorder only added to her family?s recent problems, Michael Douglas said he?s ?proud? of his wife for seeking help.

?I?m really proud of her,? Douglas, 66, said on ?The View? Monday, adding, ?It?s an issue that affects a lot of people.?

Zeta-Jones, 41, revealed last month that she was suffering from depression and had spent five days in a mental health facility.

The revelation shed new light on just how difficult the past 18 months have been for the couple, who wed in 2000.

Last January, Douglas? son Cameron, from his marriage to ex-wife Diandra Douglas, pleaded guilty to drug charges and was later sentenced to five years in prison.

Then, in August, Douglas revealed he had been diagnosed with stage 4 throat cancer.

?It?s been a long year and a half,? he told ?The View? co-hosts.

His children with Zeta-Jones, 10-year-old son Dylan and 8-year-old daughter Carys, remain unaware that their mother has been struggling recently.

?We gotta give them a chance,? Douglas said. ?They?re just getting over the other issues.?

?Life had been really, really good for me for a long, long time,? the actor said, explaining that he thought some misfortune would head his way eventually.

?I was saying, ?You know, I?m feeling like I?m going to get hit by a truck. Life?s been too good,?? he recalled.

?This karma in the last year and a half has sort of kind of balanced things out,? Douglas added. ?So I feel pretty good for the future.?

The actor, who will play Liberace in a movie with Matt Damon that begins filming in the fall, is focused on taking care of himself and his family.

?I feel fortunate and blessed with this type of cancer and the odds against recurrence,? he said, revealing he has his monthly checkup this week.
