Internal Combustion Will Rule Until at Least 2050, Study Says

Internal Combustion Engine

?

Despite the emergence of leaner, cleaner propulsion technologies like EVs and hydrogen fuel cells, a?study led by a panel advising the Energy Department?suggests?it's too early to discount the good ol' traditional internal combustion engine. According to the report, fossil fuel burning engines should remain the dominant source of automotive propulsion until at least 2050.?

?

As realistic as the estimate seems, the findings do come from an admittedly biased source: The National Petroleum Council. The study says that the primary forces preventing the advancement of alternative powerplants include the costs associated with new technology, challenges in expanding the resulting infrastructure, and technological barriers to advancement. Linda Capuano, VP for technology at Marathon Oil Corporation and a co-author of the report suggests that "It's too soon to choose" which alternate form of propulsion will prevail.?

?

Though the council includes participants from the realms of industry, government, and universities, there's also an inevitable bit of politics entwined in the findings, which recommend that?"... government policies should be technology neutral while market dynamics drive commercialization." The Obama administration appears to be the intended target of the statement, perhaps due to its decision to incentivize alternative fuel vehicles and advanced battery development. The President has also encouraged a goal of putting one million EVs on the road by 2015, an unpopular incentive among internal combustion boosters.
