(AP) ? Launching a case that legal analysts expect to be dominated by arguments over the defendant's sanity, Colorado prosecutors are filing formal charges Monday against James Eagan Holmes, the former neuroscience student accused of killing 12 people and wounding 58 others at an Aurora movie theater.

Attorneys also are arguing over a defense motion to find out who leaked information to the news media about a package the 24-year-old former neuroscience graduate student allegedly sent to his psychiatrist at the University of Colorado Denver.

Authorities seized the package July 23, three days after the shooting, after finding it in the mailroom of the medical campus where Holmes studied. Several media outlets reported that it contained a notebook with descriptions of an attack, but Arapahoe County District Attorney Carol Chambers said in court papers that the parcel hadn't been opened by the time the "inaccurate" news reports appeared.

Holmes allegedly began stockpiling gear for his assault four months ago, and authorities say he bought his weapons in May and June, well before the shooting spree just after midnight during a showing of the Batman film "''The Dark Knight Rises." He was arrested by police outside the theater.

Analysts say that means it's likely there's only one main point of legal dispute between prosecutors and the defense.

"I don't think it's too hard to predict the path of this proceeding," said Craig Silverman, a former chief deputy district attorney in Denver. "This is not a whodunit. ... The only possible defense is insanity."

Under Colorado law, defendants are not legally liable for their acts if their minds are so "diseased" that they cannot distinguish between right and wrong. However, the law warns that "care should be taken not to confuse such mental disease or defect with moral obliquity, mental depravity, or passion growing out of anger, revenge, hatred, or other motives, and kindred evil conditions."

Experts say there are two levels of insanity defenses. Holmes' public defenders could argue he is not mentally competent to stand trial, like Jared Loughner, who killed six people when he shot Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson in 2011. Loughner has pleaded not guilty to charges in the shooting. He has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and is undergoing treatment at a Missouri prison facility in a bid to make him mentally fit to stand trial.

If Holmes' attorneys cannot convince the court that he is mentally incompetent, and he is convicted, they can try to stave off a possible death penalty by arguing he is mentally ill. Prosecutors will decide whether to seek the death penalty in the coming weeks.

Holmes was not expected to enter pleas on Monday.

Holmes ultimately could enter a plea to the anticipated dozen first-degree murder charges verbally, or his attorneys could enter it for him. Prosecutors may file multiple counts of attempted first-degree murder and other charges against Holmes, whom Aurora police say booby-trapped his apartment with the intent to kill any officers responding there the night of the theater attack.

A woman who was critically wounded and whose 6-year-old daughter was killed suffered a miscarriage, her family said Saturday. The family of Ashley Moser said the trauma caused the miscarriage. Moser's daughter, Veronica Moser-Sullivan, was the youngest person killed in the attack.

Sam Kamin, a law professor at the University of Denver, said there is "pronounced" evidence that the attack was premeditated, which would seem to make an insanity defense difficult. "But," he said, "the things that we don't know are what this case is going to hinge on, and that's his mental state."

With an unruly mop of orange hair, Holmes appeared bleary-eyed and distracted during his brief initial appearance in court last week. He did not speak.

Friends in Southern California, where Holmes grew up, describe him as a smart, sometimes awkward youth fascinated by science. He came to Colorado's competitive neuroscience doctoral program in June 2011. A year later, he dropped out shortly after taking his year-end exam.

District Court Judge William Blair Sylvester has tried to tightly control the flow of information about Holmes, placing a gag order on lawyers and law enforcement, sealing the court file and barring the university from releasing public records relating to Holmes' year there. A consortium of media organizations, including The Associated Press, is challenging Sylvester's sealing of the court file.

On Friday, court papers revealed that Holmes was seeing a psychiatrist at the university. But they did not say how long he was seeing Dr. Lynne Fenton and if it was for a mental illness or another problem.

The University of Colorado's website identified Fenton as the medical director of the school's Student Mental Health Services. An online resume listed schizophrenia as one of her research interests and stated that she sees 10 to 15 graduate students a week for medication and psychotherapy, as well as 5 to 10 patients in her general practice as a psychiatrist.

Authorities say Holmes legally purchased four guns before the attack at Denver-area sporting goods stores ? a semiautomatic rifle, a shotgun and two pistols. To buy the guns, Holmes had to pass background checks that can take as little as 20 minutes in Colorado.

Sweet & Savory: 15 Minute Smoky Spaghetti Carbonara

If you follow my blog regularly, you may have seen this pasta dish last week, hinting that I'd give you the recipe for it this week.

Well, here it is!

I was honored to feature this recipe on the Quad City Moms Blog last week as a guest post. ?And since that post, I was asked to join them later today to tape a cooking segment for WQAD and their blog. ?I'm beyond nervous, but very excited. ?Wish me luck.

Back to this pasta. ?I actually have a niece that doesn't like red sauce. ?(We are still trying to figure out what is wrong with her...). ?So I'm thinking she may like this dish, as there is NO hint of red, just a creamy, salty, yummy sauce.

What's even better is this dish is made in 15 minutes and is very easy. ?I'm thinking most kids would enjoy it too - mine did! ?And I might mention that it is good cold. ?I may have eaten some cold the next day for lunch. ?Sorry, I couldn't help it.

15 Minute Smoky Spaghetti Carbonara

1/2 lb. bacon, pancetta or ham (finely cubed)

1 small onion, diced

1 1/4 c. Parmesan cheese

1/4 c. milk

2 eggs

splash of hot sauce

pepper

fresh parsley

In a large skillet, cook the meat over medium-high heat until crisp, about 5 minutes. ?Drain on paper towel-lined plate. ?Take the skillet off the heat, but do not drain the fat. ?Add onions to this skillet and cook until softened.

In a small bowl whisk together cheese, milk, eggs, hot sauce and black pepper, set aside. ?Meanwhile in a large pot of boiling salted water, cook pasta according to directions, drain and reserve 1 cup of cooking water (in case you need to thin out the sauce later).

Once the pasta is cooked (but still hot), add all ingredients back into the skillet or hot pot - pasta, meat, onion and small bowl with cheese/egg mixture. ?Toss everything together to combine. ?The heat from the pasta will thicken into a creamy sauce. ?If too thick, add a little of the pasta water. ?Garnish with fresh parsley, and serve hot.

And just to entertain you a little more, this past weekend I went to Galena, IL with some girlfriends for a day of shopping and eating. ?Lots of shopping and lots of eating. ?I'll be sharing more wonderful shots of me later this week in a recap.

We didn't eat at this burger joint but I wanted to.

Chit Chatting with Leo Anthony ? Relate Magazine

Written by: ?Jill Sheets

Godforsaken-Leo AnthonyRecently I had the honor of interviewing author Leo Anthony. ?Continue ?to read on and learn more about him, his books and who his dream cast would be for one of his books.

R: Tell us a little bit about yourself.

L: Well I?m about to start the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, as a musical theatre student. I love writing but I also enjoy drama, singing, painting, sculpting, and playing the violin. I grew up immersed within the arts, so whenever I get a chance I allow my creative juices to flow.

R: When did you start writing? What was your first story about?

L: I haven?t been writing for too long. I enjoy doing research papers; I love history and the challenge of a good essay. My English professor told me that I was a strong writer and I should challenge myself with some creative writing; and so I did. I started on a story and fell into it. My first story was Godforsaken.

R: What is your writing process? Do you out-line or just start to write?

L: I don?t have a process, it?s more like I get a jolt of inspiration and I go out buy a cup of coffee and just start typing. I like to somewhat outline what the major event will be, I write bullets for every chapter and from there I just let the story flow.

R: Tell us about your book ?Godforsaken?.

L: Godforsaken is a love story, but unlike most romance books it ends in tragedy. The characters I used are naturally bound for an unhappily ever after. These two Characters, God (Sophia) and Lucifer are naturally opposing forces that I felt would show a great example of how opposites attract.

R: How did you come up with the idea for your book?

L: I looked at my niece and I wanted a strong female character for her to admire. I thought to myself what stronger character could I possibly use than God.

R: What kind of research went into this book?

L: There wasn?t much research involved. In my religion, there are goddesses, so the concept I used has was an idea I?ve had for a long time.

R: If they were to make a movie out of this book, who would your dream cast be?

L: My dream cast would be Anne Hathaway for Sophia and Joe Manganiello as Lucifer, and although the old lady from the grocery store isn?t a major character I would love Betty White to play that part.

R: Do you have any plans on writing more books?

L: Yes I do! I am currently working on a sequel to Godforsaken and a few other stories. There is one taking place during the Salem Witch Trials that has been taking up most of my time.

R: Where can people get Godforsaken?

L: Godforsaken can be purchased at Author House, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, EBay and many other online sources. It can also be ordered into any Barnes and Noble store.

R: What are five things people may not know about you?

L: I love opera, I have many tattoos, my favorite TV show is Bones, I love sushi, and my favorite academic subject is anthropology.

R: What is the best advice you have ever gotten and by who?

L: When I was finishing up my associates degree I didn?t know which career path to take. I wanted to take a safe route instead of risking a career in the arts. My dad told me ?If you don?t wake up in the morning happy to go to work, then you?re in the wrong field.? My dad says we need a job we have a passion for, something we love to do, because if we are making a living by doing something we love, then there?s nothing more we can ask for. I think that?s great advice because many people feel pressured to go to college and get jobs because its realistic, but even though its hard we should go for our dreams before giving up.

R: What advice would you give someone who wanted to become a writer?

L: There?s only one thing I would say, DON?T BE AFRAID. There are so many talented writers out there with amazing stories but they?re afraid their story won?t make it. Some people will hate your book and some will love it. Plus any reward comes with a risk.

R: Other than this one, what is the strangest question you have ever been asked?

L: The strangest question I?ve been asked is ?Do I have any regrets??? This is a strange question because I don?t regret anything; any mistakes I made helped me grow and made me who I am today.

R: Are you or your book on any social networking sites? If so, which ones and what are their addresses? Do you have an official website? If so, what is the address?

L: I have a blog WWW.LEO-ANTHONY.COM, and I have a twitter and facebook account which there are links for on my blog. I hope to see you guys there.

R: Is there anything else you would like to add or say to your readers?

L: I hope you enjoy my book!

R: Leo, thank you for the interview. Have a great day.

Who does No. 2 work for? Rating Romney's VP choices

Picking a vice presidential nominee may be the most undemocratic election in this hemisphere since the heyday of Fidel Castro. The electorate consists of exactly one man ? in this case, Mitt Romney who has total freedom to choose virtually any card-carrying Republican who opposes abortion (the one absolute litmus test in the GOP.) Convention delegates, for all their theoretical veto power, exercise all the independence of Politburo members celebrating May Day.

As a result, handicapping the veepstakes is inevitably an exercise in frustration. What are you supposed to do ? conduct an exit poll on the sidewalk in front of Romney headquarters in Boston? Romney himself has not offered much help other than repeating the vaporous platitude that he will select a running mate ?who could be president if that were necessary.? Of course, in a technical sense, any natural born citizen over the age of 35 ? even Sarah Palin ? could be president if they are sworn in.

For all the media?s obsession with vice-presidential vetting (a word we only use in reference to sick animals and the heartbeat-away derby), there is almost no discussion about how Romney?s choice might fit into a working White House in 2013. Virtually all the press speculation revolves around compatibility on the campaign trail, the political imagery of the choice and the ability of the VP nominee to attract undecided voters in, say, Colorado who are left-handed bowlers who own PBS tote bags. But almost none of the speculation and scorecards have anything to do with serving as vice president.? Now, for the missing question: How will Romney?s pick measure up to the standards set by recent VPs?

No longer is the modern vice president a Throttlebottom who was dispatched to second-tier international funerals when the secretary of state was busy. Those days of the VP as a supernumerary whose only responsibilities were presiding over the Senate and inquiring about the president?s health are gone. The last three occupants of this ill-defined office have turned it into an independent power center -- whether as national security czar (Dick Cheney), as counselor in chief (Joe Biden) or as re-inventor of government (Al Gore).

?For most of American history, vice presidents were chosen for balance, either geographic or ideological,? says Elaine Kamarck, a former Gore aide who is now a professor at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. ?That built a tension into the relationship ? and that tension kept the vice president in a subservient and unnatural position.? But as Kamarck points out, Bill Clinton?s selection of Gore in 1992 (a similar youthful moderate Democrat from an adjoining state) permanently changed the VP equation from ?a balance model to a partner model.??

So how do the leading contenders to become Romney?s second banana measure up as potential White House partners? How do they fit the profile of someone who could actually make something of the vice presidency rather than just campaign for it?

Knowledge of Washington: The last elected vice president who was sworn in without having served in Congress or the Cabinet was Spiro Agnew in 1969. The former Maryland governor?s tenure in the Nixon White House is remembered for the ferocity of his attacks on the media (?nattering nabobs of negativism?) and his quaint habit of accepting cash in little white envelopes.

With Romney?s own Washington pedigree limited to his failed 1994 Senate race against Ted Kennedy, it would be a bold move to choose a vice president with similar gaps in his or her resume. In fact, you have to go back a century to Woodrow Wilson and his ineffectual vice president Thomas Marshall to find a team equally unacquainted with the ways of Washington. That, of course, did not prevent Wilson from dominating Congress in his first year in office (creating the modern income tax system and the Federal Reserve) or inhibit Marshall from quipping, ?What this country needs is a really good five-cent cigar.?

No one on the Romney list (not that we know precisely who is on the list) can match Ohio Senator Rob Portman in the knows-Washington category. Not only was Portman elected to seven terms in the House, but he also served in the Cabinet as George W. Bush?s trade representative and budget director. Other than Cheney and George H.W. Bush (House member, UN ambassador and CIA director before being tapped by Ronald Reagan), there have been no vice presidents in modern history with this wide-ranging background.

Paul Ryan ? who, for what it?s worth, has been rising in the VP speculation ? does offer seven terms in the House and a creative record as the fiscally conservative chairman of the Budget Committee. But for all of Ryan?s success as a GOP wunderkind (he was elected to the House from Wisconsin in 1998 as a 28-year-old), there is a narrowness to his D.C. background compared to Portman.

Executive ability: A vice president cannot run a Cabinet department or really anything beyond a presidential commission or a White House working group. But as Cheney demonstrated to perhaps a frightening degree during the run-up to the Iraq War, a vice president who understands the levers of power and the inner workings of the bureaucracy can be the most formidable figure in the federal government.

Even though he has never lived or worked outside the Minneapolis metropolitan area, former two-term Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty fits the Romney model as a competent scandal-free conservative administrator without the sharp edges of a fiery ideologue. Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal also has run something larger than a Senate office. But Jindal, still in his first term, needs the crash course in national issues that Pawlenty absorbed during his ill-fated presidential run.

Specific expertise: Vice presidents traditionally take on specific tasks such as Biden overseeing stimulus spending during the first two years of the administration. That is why it helps to be identified with a specific issue area before being tapped for the ticket. Of course, for Agnew, it was bribes and for Dan Quayle, it was spelling.

If, say, Romney chose Florida Senator Marco Rubio, whose parents came from Cuba, it seems axiomatic that the VP would be the White House point man on immigration. New Hampshire Senator Kelly Ayotte, who like Rubio was elected in 2010, would probably gravitate to the legal side of the White House and law enforcement based on her service as state attorney general. As vice president, Chris Christie?s portfolio would probably also run to law enforcement (he was a federal prosecutor before being elected New Jersey governor) and to Bruce Springsteen. And, of course, Portman and Ryan can probably recite line items from the federal budget in their sleep.

A sense of deference: This may be the hardest thing for a would-be vice president to learn (see Biden, Joe) since almost all the leading contenders have been captains of their own political fate up to now. A rare exception might be Portman (notice how he keeps popping up on these lists?) based on his tenure in the Bush Cabinet. Needless to say, it defies imagination to picture the exuberant and outspoken Christie as a make-no-waves vice president.

The truth remains that after the polls are digested, the political calculus weighed and all skeletons are exhumed from closets, the vice presidential choice will ultimately come down to what Mitt Romney looks for in a partner. And if the modern definition of a VP holds, it will be a partner in governing ? and not just someone to stand there on stage with Romney, grinning with hands aloft amid the balloons and the confetti at the Tampa Convention.?

(AP) ? The Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attack is by far the most memorable moment shared by television viewers during the past 50 years, a study released on Wednesday concluded.

The only thing that came close was President John F. Kennedy's assassination and its aftermath in 1963, but that was only for the people aged 55 and over who experienced those events as they happened instead of replayed as an historical artifact.

Sony Electronics and the Nielsen television research company collaborated on the survey. They ranked TV moments for their impact not just by asking people if they remembered watching them, but if they recalled where they watched it, who they were with and whether they talked to other people about what they had seen.

By that measure, the Sept. 11 tragedy was nearly twice as impactful as the second-ranked moment, which was the coverage of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Minutes after the first airplane struck New York's World Trade Center on a late summer morning, television networks began covering the events continuously and stayed with them for days.

The other biggest TV events, in order, were the 1995 verdict in O.J. Simpson's murder trial, the Challenger space shuttle explosion in 1986 and the death of Osama bin Laden last year, the survey found.

Sony was interested in the study for clues on consumer interests and behaviors and found "that television is really the grandmother of all the social devices," said Brian Siegel, vice president of television business for the company.

Going into the study, Siegel said he had anticipated that entertainment events like the final episode of "M-A-S-H" (ranked No. 42), the Beatles' appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show" (No. 43) and the "Who shot J.R.?" episode of "Dallas" (No. 44) would rank higher. Instead, television coverage of news events made the biggest difference in viewers' lives.

The Super Bowl is annually the most-watched TV event, with this year's game between the N.Y. Giants and New England Patriots setting an all-time record with 111 million viewers. The memories don't seem to linger, however: the top-ranked Super Bowl Sunday event in Sony's study came in 2004 and had nothing to do with football. It was Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction (No. 26).

Men and women agreed on the three most impactful television events ? Sept. 11, Katrina and Simpson. After that, some of the interests diverged.

For example, women ranked the 1997 funeral of Princess Diana as the fourth most memorable event, while men put that at No. 23. Women ranked last year's death of Whitney Houston at No. 5, with men judging it No. 21.

Similarly, the 2003 bombing of Baghdad at the start of the Iraq War was seen as the No. 14 most impactful moment by men, and No. 37 among women. Men were also far more struck by boxer Mike Tyson biting off a piece of Evander Holyfield's ear.

The passage of time has also diluted some moments once thought as unforgettable, simply because succeeding generations have no personal memory of them. Man's first moon landing in 1969 ranked No. 21.

Age also made a big difference in the survey. JFK's assassination was the second-most impactful TV event among people 55 and over, while for those between 18 and 34, it was the death of Osama bin Laden.

Young people also ranked Barack Obama's Election Night speech in 2008 at No. 3, while that didn't move older viewers quite as much (No. 24).

Simply because of their age, events like the JFK assassination, President Nixon's resignation and the moon landing didn't register at all among viewers 18 to 34. The oldest event to appear in their rankings was the 1980 shooting of John Lennon.

The study was based on an online questionnaire of 1,077 adults selected as a scientific sample from among Nielsen's panel of people measured for television ratings. It was conducted between Feb. 15-17 this year.

The study could be a good baseline for future looks at how television impacts viewers, said Paul Lindstrom, senior vice president for custom research at Nielsen.

"I'd like to see these done on a periodic basis going forward," he said.

Twitter makes changes to iPhone, Android apps

10 hrs.

New versions of the Twitter app?are available for iPhone and Android phones, with the short-messaging blog noting that they offer "several updates to bring you closer to everything you care about."

That includes expanded tweets, something that Twitter began offering on its desktop version last month.

"Since we?introduced expanded Tweets?on twitter.com, we?ve added several new partners like?MLB?and?C-SPAN?to a diverse and growing list of media sources,"?Sung Hu Kim, Twitter's product manager?for mobile, wrote on the company's blog.

Now, using Twitter apps for iPhone and Android, when you tap on a tweet linking to a Kickstarter project, he wrote, you can "play its video directly from the Tweet details view in your app." You can also read article summaries when you tap tweets linked to sources like magazines,?or view images and video?when you expand tweets linked to sites like Etsy and Vimeo.

Twitter also says it has made "major improvements?in?search autocomplete?so that you will see more suggestions when you search for people. As before, you can search for real names or @usernames before you complete your query."

There is also support for push notification for tweets for those folks you follow whenever they send a new tweet or retweet. All you have to do is turn on push notification for that person using the "action button" on their profile; you edit all notifications in your account settings on your phone.

Another added feature, this one for iPhone users but not Android, is?being able to find the "best tweets and photos for events experiences like?twitter.com/#NASCAR on your iPhone. Now, Twitter for iPhone complements any live event, whether you?re watching from home or from the stands."

Rangers walk off with win over?Twins in 13th

By STEPHEN HAWKINS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:29 a.m. ET July 9, 2012

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Ian Kinsler provided an electrifying finish for the Texas Rangers in their last game before the All-Star break.

Kinsler's lined a game-winning single into the left-center gap with one out in the 13th inning and the AL West-leading Rangers won 4-3 Sunday night after tying the game with three unearned runs in the ninth.

"You know we didn't swing the bats well all night, then that ninth inning, somehow we figured out how to get three runs on the board," Kinsler said. "That last inning, bases loaded, we've got to get it done right there."

One of eight Texas players headed to the All-Star game, Kinsler ended the Rangers' second consecutive extra-inning victory - after a season-worst five-game losing streak. His teammates stormed out of the dugout to celebrate as David Murphy scored the winning run and the ball bounced against the wall.

"It was huge," manager Ron Washington said. "We certainly needed to continue to move forward off of (Saturday). ... We just kept battling and in the ninth inning, I think we showed the character that we have in that clubhouse. We didn't quit."

Along with extra innings, there was a 46-minute delay in the fourth inning that started with a lightning bolt and a loud clap of thunder.

Michael Young, who tied the game with a two-run single with two outs in the ninth, led off the 13th against Alex Burnett (2-2) with a double into the right-field corner. He was forced out at home on Craig Gentry's grounder to shortstop Brian Dozier, whose error in the ninth set up Texas for a tying rally.

But the bases were still loaded for Kinsler.

After Young's double, Murphy had been intentionally walked before Mike Napoli reached on an infield single before Gentry's grounder.

"A lot of really good things happened there, unfortunately, we just couldn't nail it down, we couldn't finish it off," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "A disappointing loss for us, some big plays to save the game, but not enough."

The Rangers (52-34), who are tied with the New York Yankees for the most victories in the majors, have won seven consecutive series at home, and eight of nine overall. They have a four-game lead over the Los Angeles Angels in the AL West.

After the bright flash and thunder when Rangers starter Roy Oswalt was preparing to throw a pitch in the fourth, catcher Napoli and Minnesota batter Ryan Doumit quickly scrambled to their respective dugouts. Baserunner Josh Willingham dropped to his knees near first base and the game was immediately stopped, about 10 minutes before the rain began.

Rangers officials said the lightning struck north of stadium and didn't hit the facility. There were no reports of damage or any injuries.

"My heart stopped when I heard the thunder at the stadium. Glad no one heard me scream like a little girl too!! Lol," Twins right fielder Ben Revere tweeted during the ensuing delay.

"That was the loudest thing I ever heard in my life, I don't even know how to describe it. It was crazy," Young said. "Being on the field, it was nuts. ... It was interesting to see everyone's reaction, that's for sure. During the rain delay, we looked at the replay at least 40 times."

Young had his first four-hit game of the season, but missed a game-ending hit by only inches in the 11th when his liner down the right-field line was just foul before center fielder Denard Span made a running catch of his deep liner. The Rangers left the bases loaded that inning when Gentry hit a liner to first base.

The Rangers also left two runners on in the 12th when Nelson Cruz, who had the game-ending hit Saturday night, had an inning-ending grounder.

Scott Feldman (3-6), the eighth Rangers pitcher, worked the last two innings.

Texas got its three runs in the ninth off Glen Perkins right after Minnesota had padded a 1-0 lead with two unearned runs in the top of the inning off All-Star closer Joe Nathan.

Nathan's throwing error against his former team led to a run before Span hit a sacrifice fly.

Twins rookie Cole De Vries pitched seven scoreless innings against the Texas lineup with five All-Stars. The right-hander struck out five while allowing three singles, two of them to Kinsler.

The other All-Stars on the majors' top-hitting team - Elvis Andrus, Josh Hamilton, Beltre and Napoli were a combined 0 for 9 with three strikeouts, a walk and a sacrifice bunt against De Vries.

"De Vries was unbelievable," Gardenhire said.

Casey Fien threw a scoreless eighth in his first appearance for the Twins before Perkins' third blown save in seven chances.

Oswalt, who had given up 13 hits in each of his last two starts, allowed one run and five hits over 5 2-3 innings. He was gone after Justin Morneau's RBI single for a 1-0 lead.

Kinsler led off the ninth with a grounder to Dozier that turned into a two-base throwing error. After Perkins threw a wild pitch, Andrus had an RBI grounder.

Hamilton popped out to third before Texas, with only four hits to that point, had four consecutive two-out hits. That included Young's tying hit.

Notes: The game lasted 4 hours, 32 minutes, not including the 46-minute delay. ... Texas hadn't won extra-inning games on consecutive days since 1994. ... A U.S. Army soldier in uniform and wearing a glove caught a foul ball in the first row of seats down the right-field line in the second inning. Young, who ran after the ball out of his reach, was smiling after a congratulatory tap with his first baseman's mitt on the soldier's chest.

(AP) ? Phil Mickelson is getting a chance to start packing early for the British Open.

Mickelson shot his second straight 1-over 71 Friday at the Greenbrier Classic. With the projected cut at 1 under, it's likely Mickelson will miss weekend play for the second straight year.

He says he plans to head to Europe next Friday. The Open starts July 19 at Royal Lytham and St. Annes.

Tiger Woods had an afternoon tee time Friday and also began the day at 1 over. A bad round for him would mark the first time as professionals that Woods and Mickelson have missed the cut in the same tournament in the same year.

Jonathan Byrd and rookie Charlie Beljan are tied for the lead at 8 under among the early finishers.
