Switched On: Big kicks, not all for starters

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

Image

The end of last week's Switched On left doubt for the future of dedicated devices that tread on the turf of smartphones. After all, funding is key to every major new product initiative and, despite the vast fortunes of many Silicon Valley engineers that have been accumulated via IPOs and acquisitions, few wish to take on the risk of fronting a new consumer device themselves.(In 2007, the handheld FlipStart PC was hatched from FlipStart Labs, funded by Vulcan Ventures, the investment arm of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.)

Most venture capitalists abhor the device business; it is a rare device that makes it to the spotlight of startup debutante balls such as DEMO, TechCrunch Disrupt, or Launch. Even most of the 94 companies at CES' Eureka Park were not developing end-user devices Where, then, can a device entrepreneur go for funding and pick up some publicity in the process?

Dropbox adds automatic photo uploads for Mac and Windows, up to 3GB sweetener just for using it

Dropbox isn't short of aficionados, but it's undoubtedly lost some of its gleam since Google drove the cloud war into a frenzy. In response, Dropbox's devs have been at the squat rack pumping up their multimedia credentials, recently adding auto photo and video uploads to their Android app and now extending that feature to any camera, tablet, smartphone or SD card via the Mac or Windows utility -- an add-on that was previously beta-only. Access the web interface and you'll see your stills arranged in a handy new Photos page, which displays them as large thumbnails bunched together by month. There's a blunter enticement too: your first auto upload will secure 500MB in extra storage, with subsequent efforts also rewarded up to 3GB. Perhaps that cardboard isn't looking so soggy after all.

Justin Bieber Accepts Award At Tribeca Film Festival

Pop star and manager Scooter Braun were awarded the Disruptive Innovation Award for challenging industry's traditional gatekeepers.
By Jocelyn Vena

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> and his manager Scooter Braun were at the Tribeca Film Festival on Friday (April 27) to accept the <a href="/news/articles/1682522/justin-bieber-one-direction-recording.jhtml">2012 Tribeca Disruptive Innovation Award</a> for disrupting "the traditional gatekeepers of the music industry." </P><P> </P><P>Sporting a varsity jacket when he took the stage, the 18-year-old noted that a lot of what he does is a reflection of his relationship with his fans. "I don't think that I would be here without the Internet. The fans feel connected to me," he said, <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/technology/2012/04/justin-bieber-singer-teen-hearthrob-disruptive-innovator/" target="_blank">ABC News reports</a>. </P><P> </P><P><CENTER><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:757407/cp~name%3Dnews%26id%3D1682760%26vid%3D757407%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A757407" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></CENTER> </P><P> </P><P>According to <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/27/justin-bieber-tribeca-disruptive-innovation-awards_n_1459518.html" target="_blank">The Huffington Post</a>, he recalled his early days of posting videos on YouTube under the moniker KidRauhl and how he was skittish of Braun, initially. </P><P> </P><P>"He called me, and my mom was like, 'Why am I going to trust a guy named Scooter?' " Bieber said. "So she ignored him, and he started calling all of the places where he saw me sing in my videos. ... It was some really creepy stuff. He finally found my great aunt, who I had never met before, to try and get in contact with me." </P><P> </P><P>Of those early days, Braun joked, "Either I was going to be the guy who watches videos of a young boy on the Internet and gets arrested, or I was going to sign him." </P><P> </P><P>The award seems fitting, given how much Bieber's rise to fame has changed the way talent can be discovered via the internet, and can use technology to spread the word. "Ever since then," Bieber said, "We've been taking the world by storm." </P><P> </P><P>Next up, Bieber plans to storm the charts with his June album release, <a href="/news/articles/1682856/justin-bieber-believe-rapping.jhtml"><i>Believe.</i></a> He's expected to drop his <a href="/news/articles/1683642/justin-bieber-boyfriend-music-video-kiss.jhtml">"Boyfriend"</a> video soon in the lead-up to the album. </P><P> </P><P><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:744688/cp~vid%3D744688%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A744688" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></p>

Could Justin Bieber Perform With An Elvis Hologram?

The creators of Tupac's Coachella hologram reveal other artists they'd like to bring back to life: Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Michael Jackson.
By Jocelyn Vena

<P><P>The world can't seem to get enough of that <a href="/news/articles/1683173/tupac-hologram-coachella.jhtml">Tupac hologram from the Coachella festival</a>. The late rapper's lifelike image left fans in awe as it performed alongside Snoop Dogg during his set with Dr. Dre. </P><P> </P><P>The people behind the projection system that created the incredibly realistic likeness of the MC are now cooking up ideas of who else they might want to bring back to life. </P><P> </P><P>Speaking to <a href="http://www.nme.com/news/2pac/63453" target="_blank"><i>NME</i></a>, Sanj Surati, head of music at Musion Technology Ltd, explained that one of music's greats could one day perform alongside one of pop's biggest stars. Asked whether there were plans to bring back Elvis Presley and perhaps have him perform next to Justin Bieber, Surati said it "would be a cool thing." </P><P> </P><P><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:757407/cp~vid%3D757407%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A757407" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed> </P><P> </P><P>If an Elvis/Bieber collabo can't shake out, Surati explained there are others he'd like to see come to life: "Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, oh, and Michael Jackson would be the ultimate one," he said. "Maybe even Whitney Houston." </P><P> </P><P>As for the future of the famous Tupac-ogram, well, Surati hopes it can be resurrected once again on a bigger-scale tour. "This is obviously a historic and exciting initiative that we're all witnessing currently, and it would make sense for them to bring it to Europe," he said. "And maybe take it to the rest of the world." </P><P> </P><P>Since the debut of the Tupac hologram, fans have been wondering what other beloved performers could find new life using this technology. On the <a href="/news/articles/1683858/left-eye-tlc-death.jhtml">10-year anniversary of Left Eye's death</a>, there was an unconfirmed report from <a href="http://www.tmz.com/2012/04/25/tlc-reunion-tour-left-eye-lisa-lopes/#.T5hXEeDoruQ" target="_blank">TMZ</a> that TLC might bring back the group's sassy rapper for a "massive 2012 reunion tour." The group has yet to comment on the rumor. </P><P> </P><P><i>Which artist would you like to see brought back to life as a hologram? Google sells SketchUp to Trimble Navigation for undisclosed sum

Google sells SketchUp to Trimble Navigation for undisclosed sum

While we're probably more accustomed to Google buying assets than selling them 'round here, every now and again the search giant does shed some skin. El Goog's 3D modeling platform, SketchUp, is to be sold to Trimble Navigation for an undisclosed sum reports Reuters. Trimble says it's hoping to use the acquisition to enhance its office-to-field platform. The two firms will also work together to develop SketchUp's online repository of 3D models for designers to use, share and contribute to. SketchUp's blog reassures users that the free version won't change under the move. The deal should get the final nod in Q2 this year.

Ke$ha Pees on Street, Tweets Photo

Ke$ha has stooped to a new low on Twitter... literally!

The dollar-signed singer - who has tried to get attention in the past for her wild haircuts - has now given followers a glimpse at the other end of her body, as she squatted in the streets of Los Angeles early Wednesday morning and sent out a photo of herself urinating.

Ke$ha Twit Pic

"Pee pee on the street. PoPo come and get me if you can find me," Ke$ha wrote. "I blame traffic."

According to California law, if the PoPo had spotted this act, the artist could have been fined $270 fine. In related news: Ke$ha really, really needs a new hit single, lest we be subjected to more gross cries for attention.

Simon van Kempen Orgasmed During Birth of Son

There are times when we love our job. Hot case in point: when Heidi Klum nude photos hit the Internet.

There are also times when we'd prefer to be an airport baggage handler. Disgusting case in point: when we learn that Simon van Kempen had an orgasm while his wife gave birth.

Alex McCord and Simon van Kempen Book

This nugget came to our nauseating attention today, as an except from "Little Kids, Big City: Tales from a Real House in New York City" is making its way around the Internet.

The memoir, penned by Simon and Alex McCord in 2010, details the lives of the former Real Housewives of New York City cast members. In it, McCord writes of welcoming her first child into the world:

Once he was finally out of my body, I experienced a tsunami of endorphins that was almost orgasmic, and I understand completely the stories of women who have written about ecstatic birth. Simon was sitting behind me at the point of birth, and later, when we untangled ourselves, he discovered he’d actually ejaculated though hadn’t felt any of the normal lead-up to that.

Yes, this was published two years ago. But we first heard about it today and - we're very sorry - but we saw it as our mission to pass it along. You may now go deposit your lunch in the nearest toilet.

Skywalking: Russian Teens Risk Death for Daredevil Photos [Video]

This latest teen photo trend might be the clearest illustration of the difference between Russia and America. We lie down on stuff. They pose, or Skywalk, hundreds of feet in the air with nothing between them and the sudden splat of failure. More »
