Dedicated TV channel for dogs entertains pets while owners are ...

Regular Springwise readers will remember Stayhound, which matches vacationing dog owners with local pet sitters, and the Hundehiet dog ?lockers? for Norwegian shoppers. Now DOGTV has launched a 24/7 cable television channel in San Diego which aims to keep pooches entertained with specialist programming.

The company has worked with animal behavior researchers over the past few years in order to develop its content, aimed specifically at dogs. According to DOGTV, canines are happier when a television is on and the channel has been tested to ensure it captures a dog?s attention. It will be broadcasting three types of programs ? calming sections to reduce animal anxiety, stimulating sections to keep dogs entertained and segments aimed at improving their behavior. The Humane Society of the United States has recognized the channel and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has also accepted its techniques.

The concept aims to offer a solution for busy pet owners needing to spend time away from their pets and also to reduce the stress placed on dogs left at home alone. With detailed research backing its execution, this could be one to replicate elsewhere.

Bacterium fine-tunes proteins for enhanced functionality

The bacterium Mycoplasma pneumoniae, which causes atypical pneumonia, is helping scientists uncover how cells make the most of limited resources. By measuring all the proteins this bacterium produces, scientists at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany, and collaborators, have found that the secret is fine-tuning.

Like a mechanic can fine-tune a car after it has left the factory, cells have ways to tweak proteins, changing their chemical properties after production so-called post-translational modifications. Anne-Claude Gavin, Peer Bork and colleagues at EMBL measured how many of M. pneumoniae's proteins had certain modifications. They found that two forms of tweaking which were known to be common in our own cells are equally prevalent in this simple bacterium. Called phosphorylation and lysine acetylation, these two types of post-translational modification also talk to and interfere with each other: the scientists found that disrupting one can cause changes in the other. Since M. pneumoniae is one of the living organisms with the fewest different proteins, this interplay between phosphorylation and lysine acetylation may be a way of getting additional functions out of a limited number of proteins: by tweaking each protein in several ways, enabling it to perform a variety of tasks. And, as more complex cells like our own share the same protein-tweaking tactics, it is probably an ancient strategy that evolved before our branch of the evolutionary tree and M.pneumoniae's branched their separate ways.

The scientists also found that phosphorylation levels in M. pneumoniae control how much of each protein the bacterium has. Interestingly, it does so not only by influencing whether protein-building instructions encoded in DNA are read, but also by altering proteins that are involved in building other proteins. This fine-tuning may enable the cell to react faster to changing needs or situations.

When they disrupted M. pneumoniae's ability to tweak proteins, Gavin, Bork and colleagues also discovered that disaster doesn't necessarily ensue. As in our own cells, proteins in this bacterium rarely work alone. They interact with each other, work together, or perform different steps in chain reactions. The scientists found that these protein networks have a certain buffering ability: disrupting one protein can affect its immediate partners, but the problems may not propagate throughout the whole network. The scientists hope that mapping the different networks may one day enable them to predict where a targeted disruption might do the most damage, which could eventually provide valuable information for drug design.

The work, published online today in Molecular Systems Biology, was conducted in collaboration with the Centro de Regulacion Genomica in Barcelona, Spain, Utrecht University in the Netherlands, and Georg-August University Gttingen and Heidelberg University, both in Germany.

The study follows up on work published in 3 back-to-back papers in Science in 2009 (http://www.embl.de/aboutus/communication_outreach/media_relations/2009/091127_Heidelberg/index.html).

Americans Listening to Politicians, Not Climate Scientists
Public acceptance of climate change was at its prime in the mid-2000s, yet political bipartisanship also hit a high point. As the economy began to plummet, people began listening to politicians on climate change instead of scientists, new opinion-poll-based research suggests.

Myrtle Beach real estate home foreclosures ? Artikel-Schrijven.com

Do you want to save thousands of dollars on Myrtle Beach real estate foreclosures? Are you aware where to find these good deals? Please take note that you are at the right position. You can take a look at our own list of foreclosed attributes here for free. Upon our listings you can find Beach houses, Problems homes, real estate apartments and Luxury Complete holidays properties rented or sale.

The estimated population connected with Myrtle Beach houses for sale is 28,600 and it is probably the most well-known city within the Fantastic Strand. Myrtle Beach is really a holiday destination ever since the late 1800s and through the 1900s individuals began to call Myrtle Seaside, South Carolina home. Your beach, golf courses, shopping, leisure, and special attractions have made the area popular for millions of people. Those in the know bought real estate and attempt to perform so due to the fact no matter what the market has been doing they realize that there exists only one Ocean for the east coast.

When I are asked about homes and also condos foreclosures within the Myrtle Beach area these asking think there are multiple properties accessible. Some do not believe me personally when I tell them that runners foreclosures are limited and what?s actually for sale in modern day real estate market. Our Mls (MLS) includes property listed for sale in the sixty mile coastal area known as The Lavish Strand. I was shocked myself when I opened up the real numbers on the Coastal Carolina Association regarding Realtors (CCAR) who supervise our MLS process. According to CCAR in the single family home group (eliminating manufactured homes) there are 5,503 Myrtle Beach virginia homes but only 270 of these were foreclosures along with the condo/townhouse group there were 4,718 units listed for sale with merely 99 foreclosures.

The actual would-be buyer of the foreclosure real estate is ignorant that during the past month or two the purchase of distressed property or home has become more complicated understanding that complexity may be more serious around Myrtle Beach due to number of foreclosure real estate investment that is a second home or maybe vacation home. There has always been a difficulty using short-sales because only 15% of them ever get finalized and closed but foreclosure purchases were quite easy so far. First the major lenders withdrew real estate that they had stated for sale, then after a couple of days they republished some properties but the days of an easy transaction are most often over. A prime illustration happened only weeks ago when, on the day a foreclosure purchase ended up being scheduled to close, the closing legal representative obtained a call from the loan company to say they were taking out the property from the foreclosed process and it could not be sold. The relations who assumed they would be moving into their great foreclosures home were left with outright a moving pickup loaded with their furnishings and no home.

There?s also another thing to take into consideration, at the very least in this real estate market, when you?d like to find the best value with Myrtle Beach homes it may be standing inventory completely new construction. A Realtor offers right of admittance to all properties detailed for sale on the Multiple listing service and that would include real estate foreclosures and new structure.

For more information about houese for sale Myrtle Beach visit our website.

Oscar 'In Memoriam' Omits Stars Of 'Grease,' 'Rambo'

Jeff Conaway, character actor Charles Napier and 'Batman' star Michael Gough among those left out of segment on Sunday's show.
By Gil Kaufman

Some people watch the Oscars to see the pretty dresses, look for potential nip slips, revel in the weepy acceptance speeches, root against the leading contenders and yes, a few even tuned in for host Billy Crystal's paint-by-numbers movie spoofs.

But then there are those of us who wait for the annual "In Memoriam" segment that pays tribute to those the movie world has last over the past year, eager to see who has been omitted. In the past two years, that list has included "Airplane!" star Peter Graves and "Lost Boys" actor Corey Haim. In 2010, some fans were outraged that former pin-up and "Charlie's Angels" star Farrah Fawcett (who appeared in films including "Logan's Run" and "Dr. T and the Women") was left out while singer Michael Jackson made the list.

You can't always include everyone, and while this year's list hit the high points with tributes to such greats as Elizabeth Taylor, Whitney Houston, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs and director Sidney Lumet, it did, alas, miss a few bold-faced names.

Among the most notable was the classic character actor Charles Napier, who died in October at age 75. From the "Blues Brothers" to "Philadelphia," "Silence of the Lambs," "Rambo: First Blood II" and "The Cable Guy," Napier was the go-to guy for the craggy tough guy with a heart of gold, or steel.

Another star missing from the tribute was Bubba Smith. Though best-known earlier in life as an imposing defensive end who played in two Super Bowls during a nine-year NFL career, Smith reinvented himself in the late 1970s and 1980s as a comedic actor with roles in the six "Police Academy" films as Cadet Moses Hightower and in other comedies including "The Naked Truth" and "The Silence of the Hams." In addition, he posted a slew of TV appearances on series including "Good Times," "Sabrina, the Teenage Witch" and "Family Matters."

His later years were marred by a deadly drug addiction, but actor Jeff Conaway earned his spot in Hollywood history by playing the swaggering Kenickie in the smash 1978 movie musical "Grease." He would never reach those heights again on the big screen, appearing in a string of B movies including "Almost Pregnant," "Alien Intruder," "Bikini Summer II" and "L.A. Goddess," but he made his mark again on TV as the lovable Bobby Wheeler in five seasons of the series "Taxi."

For lovers of the rebooted "Batman" big-screen franchise, the omission of character actor Michael Gough was a crime. The Englishman, who appeared in more than 150 movies, began his career in 1948 with a small role in "Anna Karenina" and worked consistently until his death last March at the age of 94, introducing himself to a new generation in 1989 in Tim Burton's "Batman" as unflappable butler Alfred Pennyworth. Gough would reprise the role three more times and end his career with a voice-over part in Burton's 2010 remake of "Alice in Wonderland."

In addition, after leaving her off last year following her death just weeks before the 83rd Oscars, the Academy once again passed over French actress Maria Schneider, who became famous for her career-making (and some say breaking) role as Marlon Brando's sexual obsession in 1972's "Last Tango in Paris." One bigger-than-life star the Academy also managed to miss was the buxom Z-movie superstar Tura Satana, who also passed away just weeks before last year's Oscars. The cult movie object of obsession appeared in Russ Meyer's classic 1965 jigglefest "Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!" as well as such other drive-in fare as "The Astro-Zombies," "The Doll Squad" and Rob Zombie's 2009 "The Haunted World of El Superbeasto."

Getting The Most Practical Home-Improvement Tools ? angealero.com

Sometimes when you do jobs around the house, you can use tools that are really meant for a different job, and they might not do as good a job as you would like. So you don?t have to buy any new tools, do the jobs that require the tools that you already have. Keep all of your tools in an organized spot, so you know what you have, and when you need them, you will know where they are at. Home improvement projects need tools to be completed, so we will discuss some of the essential ones.

Most people don?t have a device to move heavy objects, even though it would be quicker and save on wear and tear of their back. The back will eventually wear out by moving too many things, such as heavy furniture, and that is why a dolly should be used, anytime something heavy needs to be moved. If it is at all practical, moving your furniture on wheels is safer for the furniture and also you. Getting a stair trolley works really well if you have lots of stuff to move up or down stairs. Anything will work better that having to lug boxes all day long, especially up and down the stairs. Whether you do work around your yard, or have a garden, a wheelbarrow is one tool you should have. This will enable you to roll heavy items around rather than carrying them. Nothing is worse when you are diligently working on a project and you are unable to find the tool you need. The really small items like screws and nails are nearly impossible to keep orderly. One great piece of equipment is a tool be> this can keep your smaller items close at hand when you are working on a project. A tool apron is another valuable item that will offer pockets to hold your smaller tools or supplies in. Your home improvement projects will be more organized and less taxing when you know where all of your equipment and supplies are located. This belt or apron is a lifesaver and will not cost a lot, but will make a huge difference in the operation of your project.

Another essential for a lot of home improvement jobs is having a quality ladder. When you think of the list of home improvement repairs needed to be done on your house, quite a few of them, such as painting or repairing shingles, need a ladder. When you only need to reach so high, like most indoor tasks, all you will need is a stepladder. An extension ladder will be needed for higher places, especially when painting. Make sure you check out the duty ratings, because not all ladders have the same strength. The ladder you need depends on the combined weight of what you are carrying and how much you weigh. An example, would be carrying a bundle of shingles up the ladder, which are heavy, so you would need a heavier duty ladder than if you were climbing the ladder without carrying anything. It is really important to have a ladder that is long enough, because it is quite dangerous when you have to stretch.

You really need to have the right tools, no matter what kind of home improvement job you are planning. There are a lot of people who seem to collect tools, but you are going to the improvement store to get what you need, and nothing else. It is a good investment, in the long run, to spend a decent amount of money for some quality tools, because after many years, you will still have these tools.

Understanding Value Investing | iStockAnalyst.com

The case can be made that every investor should be a value investor. Who wants to invest in something that isn't going to make them money or build wealth?

However, what I want to talk about is a specific philosophy that influences the way in which someone selects equities.

Value investing is a very popular stock-picking method. In the 1930s, Benjamin Graham and David Dodd, finance professors at Columbia University, laid out what many consider to be the framework for value investing. The concept is actually very simple: Find companies trading below their inherent worth.

Let me emphasize again, the method is not about second-hand generic shopping. Don't pick junk. Yet, it's about finding stocks that the market hasn't correctly priced ? stocks that are worth more than what the market says their current price is.

The Underlying Business

The value investor picks his or her stocks based on the underlying business of that equity and its fundamentals, rather than other influences on the stock's price. Primarily these fundamentals are such things as earnings growth, dividends, cash flow, book value, etc?

Also, keep in mind that value investors are "buy and hold" investors. This isn't a day trading approach ? it's definitely for the long haul. That's the only way it works because you need time.

If the fundamentals are sound, but the stock's price is below its obvious value, the value investor knows this is a likely investment candidate. The market has incorrectly valued the stock. When the market corrects that mistake, the stock's price should experience a nice rise.

What to Look For

Investors should settle on a formula that works for them, but it will probably include a minimum these six elements:

  • A price-earnings ratio (P/E) in the bottom 10% of its sector.
  • A PEG of less than one. By taking growth into account, the PEG ratio is widely considered a more accurate reflection of a stock's true value, rather than just the P/E ratio. Using the PEG ratio is easy. A PEG of 1.0 means the market considers the stock to be fair value. A PEG under 1.0 means the stock is undervalued, while a PEG over 1.0 means the stock is overvalued.
  • A debt-to-equity ratio of less than one.
  • Strong earnings growth over an extended period. Some say a realistic range would be around 6% to 8% over seven to 10 years.
  • A price-to-book ratio of one or less.
  • Don't pay more that 60% to 70% of the stock's intrinsic per share price.

Evolution of earliest horses driven by climate change

ScienceDaily (Feb. 23, 2012) ? When Sifrhippus, the earliest known horse, first appeared in the forests of North America more than 50 million years ago, it would not have been mistaken for a Clydesdale. It weighed in at around 12 pounds -- and it was destined to get much smaller over the ensuing millennia.

Sifrhippus lived during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum, a 175,000-year interval of time some 56 million years ago in which average global temperatures rose by about 10 degrees Fahrenheit, caused by the release of vast amounts of carbon into the atmosphere and oceans.

About a third of mammal species responded with significant reduction in size during the PETM, some by as much as one-half. Sifrhippus shrank by about 30 percent to the size of a smallhouse cat (about 8.5 pounds) in the PETM's first 130,000 years and then rebounded to about 15 pounds in the final 45,000 years of the PETM.

Scientists have assumed that rising temperatures or high concentrations of carbon dioxide primarily caused the phenomenon in mammals during this period, and new research led by Ross Secord of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Jonathan Bloch of the Florida Museum of Natural History at the University of Florida in Gainesville offers new evidence of the cause-and-effect relationship between temperature and body size. Their findings also offer clues to what might happen to animals in the near future from global warming.

In a paper to be published in the Feb. 24 issue of the international journal Science, Secord, Bloch and colleagues used measurementsand geochemical composition of fossil mammal teeth to document a progressive decrease in Sifrhippus' body size that correlates very closely to temperature change over a 130,000-year span.

Bloch, associate curator of vertebrate paleontology at the Florida Museum of Natural History, said multiple trails led to the discovery.

One was the fossils themselves, recovered from the Cabin Fork area of the southern Bighorn Basin near Worland, Wyo. Stephen Chester, then an undergraduate student at Florida, now an anthropology Ph.D. candidate at Yale and a co-author on the paper, had the task of measuring the horses' teeth. What he found when he plotted them through time caught Bloch and Secord by surprise.

"He pointed out that the first horses in the section were much larger than those later on," Bloch recalled. "I thought something had to be wrong, but he was right -- and the pattern became more robust as we collected more fossils."

A postdoctoral researcher in Bloch's lab for the first year of the project, Secord performed the geochemical analysis of the oxygen isotopes in the teeth. What he found provided an even bigger surprise.

"It was absolutely startling when Ross pulled up the first oxygen isotope data," Bloch said. "We looked at the curve and we realized that it was exactly the same pattern that we were seeing with the horse body size.

"For the first time, going back into deep time -- going back 10s of millions of years -- we were able to show that indeed temperature was causing essentially a one-to-one shift in body size within this lineage of horse. Because it's over a long enough time, you can argue very strongly that what you're looking at is natural selection and evolution -- that it's actually corresponding to the shift in temperature and driving the evolution of these horses."

Secord, who came to UNL in 2008 as an assistant professor of Earth and atmospheric sciences and curator of vertebrate paleontology at the University of Nebraska State Museum, said the finding raises important questions about how plants and animals will respond to rapid change in the not-too-distant future.

"This has implications, potentially, for what we might expect to see over the next century or two, at least with some of the climate models that are predicting that we will see warming of as much as 4 degrees Centigrade (7 degrees Fahrenheit) over the next 100 years," he said.

Those predictions are based largely on the 40 percent increase of atmospheric carbon dioxide levels (from 280 to 392 parts per million) since the start of the Industrial Revolution in the mid-19th century.

Ornithologists, Secord said, have already started to notice that there may be a decrease in body size among birds.

"One of the issues here is that warming (during the PETM) happened much slower, over 10,000 to 20,000 years to get 10 degrees hotter, whereas now we're expecting it to happen over a century or two," Secord said. "So there's a big difference in scale and one of the questions is, 'Are we going to see the same kind of response?' Are animals going to be able to keep up and readjust their body sizes over the next couple of centuries?"

Increased temperatures are not the only change animals will have to adapt to, Secord said. Greenhouse experiments show that increased atmospheric carbon dioxide lowers the nutritional content of plants, which he said could have been a secondary driver of dwarfism during the PETM.

Other co-authors on thepaper are Doug M. Boyer of Brooklyn College, Aaron R. Wood of the Florida Museum of Natural History, Scott L. Wing of the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, Mary J. Kraus of the University of Colorado-Boulder, Francesca A. McInerny of Northwestern University, and John Krigbaum of the University of Florida.

The research was funded by grants from the National Science Foundation, with additional support from UNL.

Cato Journal Immigration Symposium Round-Up, Bryan Caplan ...

I've now read the full Cato Journal immigration issue cover-to-cover.? Leaving aside my lead article, here are my brief reactions:

1. Gordon Hanson, "Immigration and Economic Growth."? Pretty good, especially on the interaction between high-skilled native labor and low-skilled immigrant labor:

One contribution of low-skilled immigrants is to make it possible for high-skilled workers to spend more time on the job and less time doing non-work related chores... The majority of highly educated women are married to highly educated men (Isen and Stevenson 2010: 13). For both to work outside the home often requires hiring outside labor to care for children, clean the home, launder clothes, and tend to the yard. In a study of immigration's impact on U.S. cities, Cortes (2008) finds that metropolitan areas that have had larger influxes of low-skilled immigrants have lower prices for dry cleaning, child care, housing cleaning, yard care, and other labor-intensive services. Lower prices for these services translate into more hours spent at work for high-skilled workers, particularly among women with a professional degree or PhD (Cortes and Tessada 2009). Low-skilled immigration thus indirectly contributes to productivity growth by raising the effective supply of high-skilled labor.
2. Giovanni Peri, "Immigration, Labor Markets, and Productivity."? If all labor is identical, the effect of immigration on domestic wages is clearly negative, at least in the short-run.? But in reality, immigrant labor and native labor are very different - and it matters.? Peri provides an excellent survey of the evidence.? One highlight:
In Peri and Sparber (2009) we show that, due to the limited knowledge of the language, immigrants have a comparative advantage in manual type of jobs. Hence they specialize in those, and in firms and sectors that hire immigrants, this produces higher demand for jobs of coordination and interaction typically staffed by natives, whose language skills are superior. This dynamic specialization in tasks according to skills pushes natives to upgrade their jobs (as communication-intensive occupations pay better than manual intensive ones) and protects their wages from competition with immigrants.
3. Joel Kotkin and Erika Ozuna, "America's Demographic Future."? A good intro to the demographic effects of immigration.? Immigration is keeping America young and working:
Mexican and other immigrants are one key reason why America boasts a fertility rate 50 percent higher than Russia, Germany, or Japan, and well above that of China, Italy, Singapore, Korea, and virtually all of eastern Europe (The Economist 2002; United Nations 2005; Longman 2004: 60). Consequently, it is widely believed America's workforce will continue to grow even as that of Japan, Europe, Korea, and eventually even China will start to shrink.

Between 2000 and 2050, for example, the U.S. workforce is projected to grow by over 40 percent, while that of China shrinks by 10 percent, the EU by 25 percent and, most remarkably, Japan's by over 40 percent (U.S. Census Bureau International Database).

4. Stuart Anderson, "America's Incoherent Immigration System." A solid moderate reformist piece:
[M]uch can be accomplished by simply raising the quotas for temporary visas for both low- and high-skilled workers and increasing the number of green cards available for family and employer-sponsored immigrants.
5. Pia Orrenius and Madeline Zavodny.? "The Economic Consequences of Amnesty for Unauthorized Immigrants."? Pretty good, but most readers will get more out of the broader articles on the labor market and fiscal effects of immigration.

6. Edward Alden. "Immigration and Border Control."? Alden wants people to acknowledge the trade-off between the ease of legal immigration and the cost of border enforcement.? Perhaps he's just being strategic, but Alden shows little concern for the well-being of immigrants or the immorality of treating people like criminals for doing an honest day's work:

There are certainly many--indeed the majority of the American public at the moment--who would argue against higher levels of immigration. That is perfectly reasonable. But the debate should be an honest one. Larger legal quotas, especially for less-skilled workers, would reduce the need for enforcement; smaller quotas would increase it. Instead, the discussion is a disingenuous one in which many in Congress insist that the border must first be "secured" before any serious consideration of immigration reform can be permitted.
7. Jim Harper. "Internal Enforcement, E-Verify, and the Road to a National ID."? A frightening picture of rapid technological progress in the war on illegal immigration.? But like Alden, Harper shows little concern for the rights of immigrants.? And he frustratingly equivocates between the "values of the people" as expressed in private behavior, and the "values of the people" as expressed in the voting booth:
[T]he goal of many of E-Verify's proponents is to bring the rule of law to the immigration environment. Fealty to law is important for the maintenance of a just and stable society, and immigration law is widely disrespected and often broken. But good law is not a hammer waved over the heads of subservient people. Good law gives expression to the values of the people.

Immigration law is disrespected and broken not because it is poorly enforced, but because it is inconsistent with the will of the people. In the main, the majority of the American people express their will quietly but insistently in their decisions to hire good, hard workers, and to enjoy the product of these workers' labor, indifferent to where the worker was born.

8. Margaret Stock. "Is Birthright Citizenship Good for America?" Stock's answer, of course, is yes.? But her piece is not persuasive.? People oppose birthright citizenship because they oppose immigration.? If you don't change their minds about immigration, you won't change their minds about birthright citizenship, either.

9. Daniel Griswold. "Immigration and the Welfare State."? The best in the bunch.? Griswold provides a careful survey of the literature on the fiscal effects of immigration, and never forgets that immigrants count, too.? I'll blog the highlights in a separate post.

10. Raul Hinojosa-Ojeda. "The Economic Benefits of Comprehensive Immigration Reform."? Provides a computable general equilibrium model of the effects of different immigration reform scenarios.? Unfortunately, this approach just isn't transparent enough to change a skeptic's mind.? And I can't understand how the same model could imply that:

(a) Comprehensive immigration reform (amnesty, more or less) "results in higher wages--and higher worker productivity--for all workers in industries where large numbers of immigrants are employed."

AND

(b) Under mass deportation, "Wages do rise for less-skilled native-born workers under this scenario, but they fall for higher-skilled natives and the U.S. economy loses a large numbers of jobs."

Perhaps I'm missing something, but how can amnesty and mass deportation both boost wages for less-skilled natives?

11. Joshua Hall, Benjamin VanMetre, and Richard Vedder. "U.S. Immigration Policy in the 21st Century: A Market-Based Approach."? A lot of good material, but it ends on a disappointingly agnostic and amoral note:

As has been shown in this article, for every pro-immigration argument there is an opposing anti-immigration argument and thus it is unlikely that there will be an immigration policy that everyone will agree on. It is possible, however, to devise an immigration policy that would appeal both to those supporting more immigrants and to those who complain about the character of immigration after 1965.
Namely:
[C]reating an international market for visas. To start, each business day of the year 5,000 visas for entry to the United States would be sold in a NASDAQ-style marketplace by the federal government and each immigrant would need a visa to enter the country. There would also be a limited number of visas, maybe 100,000 annually, provided free by the federal government to refugees fleeing political, religious, or other persecution as is
done under current law.
My question for the authors: You find it "unlikely that there will be an immigration policy that everyone will agree on."? Fair enough.? But what makes you think that your proposal will have broader appeal than any other proposal on the table?? Indeed, how many non-economists would even consider your approach?

Alex the Parrot's Posthumous Paper Shows His Mathematical Genius

News | More Science

Alex and a chimpanzee named Sheba are the only nonhumans that have so far been shown to represent the numerical value of a summed set, an ability once thought to depend on language

Image: Alex Foundation

From Nature magazine

Even in death, the world's most accomplished parrot continues to amaze. The final experiments involving Alex ? an African grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus) trained to count objects ? have just been published.

They show that Alex could accurately add together two Arabic numerals to a sum of eight and the total number of objects under three cups, putting his mathematical abilities on par with (and maybe beyond) those of chimpanzees and other non-human primates. The work appears in the journal Animal Cognition.

Alex gained world renown for his ability to learn and voice labels for dozens of different objects and concepts, such as colour, size and quantity. His primary trainer, Harvard University psychologist Irene Pepperberg, even reported that Alex understood a "zero-like" concept.

In early September 2007, Alex said to Pepperberg: "You be good. I love you. See you tomorrow." The next day, the 31-year-old parrot was found dead of what was determined to be a heart event, probably related to hardened arteries (see Farewell to a famous parrot).

Pepperberg and her colleagues had been testing Alex on a series of tasks pushing the limits of his mathematic prowess.

In previous work, the parrot gave hints that he could add objects. For instance, when presented with a tray containing four green, three red and five blue blocks and asked "what colour five?", Alex would respond "blue", suggesting that he had totted up the blocks of different colours.

But Pepperberg didn't get the idea to probe Alex's ability to add until she was testing whether another parrot named Griffin could equate sound sequences with quantities. She played two clicks, hoping Griffin would squawk "two", but he said nothing. After two more clicks, Alex, who was in the same room, chimed in with "four", two more clicks and Alex said "six".

"I just looked at him and said you want to do addition? Fine," Pepperberg says.

She discovered that Alex could accurately add two sets of objects, such as crackers or jelly beans, as long as the total was six or less. In related work, Alex learned to order correctly the Arabic numerals 1 through 8 (in the form of multicoloured refrigerator magnets). She says he then spontaneously learned to equate these symbols with the appropriate number of objects.

In the latest work, Pepperberg tested whether Alex could add the Arabic numerals and also whether he could sum three sets of objects totalling six or less. Both experiments were cut short when Alex died, but Pepperberg says that the parrot did better than chance in both experiments.

In 12 trials of the Arabic numeral addition task, when asked "How many total?" he indicated the correct sum nine times, demonstrating that 3 + 4 is 7, 4 + 2 is 6, 4 + 4 is 8 and so on. When presented sequentially with three sets of objects hidden under three cups and asked how many, Alex offered the correct answer eight out of ten times. He determined, for instance, that 1, 2 and one jelly beans adds up to four.

Pepperberg was able to complete only one round of each task before Alex died. She would have liked to present more combinations of numerals and objects to better determine how Alex was performing addition and to see whether some errors were more common than others. But the fact that the tasks were completely new to Alex reassures Pepperberg that his performance was genuine and not, for instance, a function of practice.

"I wish that Alex had lived longer and I think this is an important study because it showed what he could do and where he was going," she says.

The Quicksand template wants to animate your business web apps ...

ProductivityThere?s a great new template in the project exchange that you have to check out. It?s called the ?Quicksand template?, and it uses a really cool jQuery effect to bring animated sorting and filtering to your web apps. As you can see from the demo, it creates a pretty slick, yet unique interface.

As with all templates in the project exchange, it?s free for m-Power users. So, if you want to build web applications with this template, head on over to this page and download it. For those that want to learn a little more about the Quicksand Template first, here?s a nice description.

What is a template?

If you?re unfamiliar with m-Power templates, let me give you a short explanation. I hesitate to use the word ?template?, because m-Power?s templates are nothing like the typical templates you might find in MS Word or Powerpoint. Those templates do nothing more than provide a basic layout, while m-Power?s templates are far more powerful.

m-Power?s templates are essentially pre-built (yet customizable) web applications. They include the application layout, foundation, and advanced features like ajax suggest, sorting, filtering, searching, graphing, and much more. Basically, once you add your data and define a few specs, you?ve created a web application.

Now, that?s just a basic explanation, but it should give you a decent idea of what m-Power?s templates include. If you would like to learn more, feel free to check out this page.

Recipe: Blueberry & Lime Chia Fresca - Health Food Lover

Chia (Salvia hispanica) is a?seed rich in the vegetable pre-formed form of essential fatty acids (EFA) but you need enough of certain nutrients to convert it?(fish is a source of the formed animal EFA). It is also a source of soluble fibre and the seed becomes mucilaginous when it contact with water. Many websites make elaborate claims for Chia, however many of these claims are not supported by the scientific literature so?unless something is backed up by good research, be careful what?you read?(1).

Due to Chia?s mucilaginous properties, in cooking and creating recipes Chia can be quite useful. It can aid as an egg replacer (though it won?t have the same nutritional properties as eggs), it can be made into a gel, it can thicken ice creams, puddings and smoothies.

The chia recipe I?m sharing with you today is Chai Fresca. It?is a?refreshing citrusy drink made with chia. In my version of Chia Fresca i?ve used lime and also added blueberries.

?

Recipe: Blueberry & Lime Chia Fresca

Alleregen info/recipe info: Chia is gluten-free and?dairy-free. This recipe is vegan/vegetarian/paleo friendly.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (or more) of water
  • 1/4 lime, juiced
  • a few blueberries
  • 1/2- 1 Tbps. chia

How to:

Pour the water in a glass and stir in the lime juice. Add the blueberries and chia seeds. And stir the Chia seeds for a few minutes so they do not become lumpy. Enjoy!

Note: The longer the chia sits the thicker the drink will become.
