Forecast: Travel prices set to rise in 2012

Higher demand and a reduced number of available seats will lead to higher airline ticket prices next year, even in a slow-growing economy, according to the American Express Global Business Travel Forecast released Wednesday.

  1. Don't miss these Travel stories

    1. Munching bugs: Tasty, popular and eco-smart

Forget ?Fear Factor? and stories of survival. Insects are gaining some tasty notoriety ? getting served at fine restaurants and fairs and museums around the country.

    2. Book a hotel room with a boo!
    3. 4 spooky museum exhibits
    4. Jack the cat 'not out of the woods yet'
    5. Traveler gets 'personal' note on TSA card

But prices won't jump as much as they did between 2010 and 2011, the forecast said. Business class airfares are expected to rise the most next year.

American Express predicts prices for shorter North American flights in coach will increase by about 2 to 5 percent, while prices for longer economy flights will rise by 0.5 to 3.5 percent. In business class, rates will rise between 5 and 7 percent on shorter trips and between 3 and 5 percent for longer ones.

These increases should stick even if some Americans opt to stay home amid fears of another recession, as airlines target travelers that are willing to pay more, the forecast said.

American Express also predicts that hotel prices will be up in the low single-digits in 2012, much the same as this year.

But consumers might get a break when renting a car. Car rental rates in North America are expected to remain flat as the industry remains competitive and hold a high number of excess cars.

The 2012 Global Forecast is based on a number of data sources, including data from the American Express Business Travel Monitor, the American Express contracted rates database, transaction reports and other data sources including Smith Travel Research Global Hotel Reviews and Global Business Travel Association research on travel spending.

Insurance firm agrees to pay Joplin survivor | The Associated Press ...

AP Photo/The Joplin Globe, T. Rob Brown, File

FILE - In this Oct. 3, 2011 file photo, Mark Lindquist, of Joplin, Mo., reacts after being released from the Missouri Rehabilitation Center in Mount Vernon, Mo. Lindquist, an underpaid social worker who nearly gave his life trying to save three developmentally disabled adults from the Joplin tornado, has been honored by both houses of the Missouri legislature, the Senate resolution calling him "a true hero and inspiration to others."

An insurance company that initially refused to pay the medical bills of a man injured in the Joplin tornado while he tried to save three residents of a group home where he worked has now agreed to pay the claim, the company said Monday.
Mark Lindquist was in a coma for nearly two months, broke every rib, lost most of his teeth and suffered other catastrophic injuries in the May 22 tornado. He had placed three middle-aged men with Down syndrome beneath mattresses, then climbed atop one of the mattresses, to try and protect them.
The men died. Lindquist survived but ran up medical bills in excess of $2.5 million. He worked in a job paying barely above minimum wage and couldn't afford medical insurance.
He sought workers' compensation, claiming he was injured on the job. His company's workers' compensation provider, Accident Fund Insurance Company of America, denied the claim in June "based on the fact that there was no greater risk than the general public at the time you were involved in the Joplin tornado," according to a letter from a claims adjuster.
But on Monday, a day after an Associated Press story, Accident Fund Insurance Company of America agreed to pay.
"Upon further review of the case, and receiving additional information on the facts involved in this situation, Accident Fund believes the appropriate decision is to honor Mr. Mark Lindquist's claim for worker's compensation benefits," Mike Britt, president of the Lansing, Mich.-based insurance company, said. "We are committed to working with Mr. Lindquist to ensure he receives all the benefits to which he is entitled and helping him to recover from his injuries."
Lindquist, 51, did not have a phone listing but his sister, Linda Lindquist Baldwin, said the family still plans to meet with an attorney to consider all options before accepting the payment. But she said the family was overwhelmed by the turnaround.
"What it's going to mean for Mark is long-term help and medical care for him," Baldwin said, adding that Accident Fund has agreed to pay all past and future medical bills related to his injuries. "My only concern is that Mark's cared for. He's younger than I am and will probably outlive me, and I want to make sure he is cared for his entire life."

"Magic Tree House" film premieres in Japan (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? The "Magic Tree House" books have whisked millions of readers on adventures to everywhere from ancient Egypt to feudal Japan. Now, the children's time-travel series is embarking on a new destination: the movie theater.

The Japanese animated adaptation, which premiered at the Tokyo International Film Festival, comes to the cinema about two decades after author Mary Pope Osborne was walking past an old tree house and got the idea for the series that has sold nearly 100 million books worldwide.

Osborne had previously opposed selling the adaptation rights to the books, known for their value for teaching reading, history and geography, because she wanted to keep the stories in children's imaginations.

But she was impressed with the vision of the Japanese filmmakers, who visited Osborne and her husband in the United States to show them the script and illustrations for the movie, and felt confident they would make a good film.

"We thought they totally captured the spirit of the brother and sister in the story," Osborne told Reuters at the premiere of "Magic Tree House" on Sunday, the festival's second day.

"The heart of the story was so intact that to me, it was just perfect in that way."

The film, produced by Media Factory and set to be released in Japan in January, follows Jack and his little sister Annie, who discover a tree house filled with books in fictional Frog Creek, Pennsylvania. In the early books, Jack is eight years old and Annie seven.

When Jack points to a picture in a book on dinosaurs and the siblings are suddenly transported to prehistoric times, they realize that the tree house is magical and can take them to any time and place in history they wish to visit.

"DETERMINED AND COURAGEOUS"

Jack and Annie need to summon every ounce of courage as their lives are threatened by everything from a rampaging Tyrannosaurus Rex to marauding pirates.

Osborne visited schools in Japan's tsunami-hit areas last week and said she was moved by the strength of the children, who she couldn't help notice embodied the heroic qualities that she instilled in Jack and Annie.

"The characters are so determined and courageous, and resilient and loving at the same time," she said.

"Everything I heard about the children there and saw in the short time, it felt so in harmony with that."

Osborne has written about 100 books over a 30-year career and shows no sign of stopping -- or being stopped.

"I broke my finger and wrist two years ago and I was literally typing a 'Magic Tree House' like this," she said, mimicking the action of typing painstakingly with rigid hands and two fingers. "But I got the whole book done."

She is working on a "Magic Tree House" book set at a panda reserve against the backdrop of the 2008 earthquake in China.

Osborne's husband, Will, and her sister, Natalie Pope Boyce, pen the non-fiction companion books to the series. The three are also starting an educational program in the United States to give away books to underprivileged children.

"It's just a launching pad to learning about the world and getting excited about learning. That's what our mission is," she said. "It's always been inspiring. I don't think I'll ever stop."

The role of fat in assessing breast cancer risk

It is known that a high proportion of dense breast tissue, as seen with a mammogram, is associated with a high risk of breast cancer. But the role of non-dense fat tissue in the breast is less clear. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Breast Cancer Research separates the breast cancer risks associated with dense, fibroglandular tissue, and fat, and shows that large areas of either are independently associated with an increased risk.

The mammograms of postmenopausal women with breast cancer were compared to controls without cancer. The study used sophisticated computer software to read the films to reduce reader error (or intuition). The software simply compared dense versus non-dense tissue and was not looking for specific irregularities.

Not surprisingly older women and women with a higher BMI have a higher percentage of non-dense tissue. The women with breast cancer tended to have a larger area of dense tissue and a larger area of non-dense tissue so that the biggest risk was for women with the largest areas of both. However this is not necessarily reflected in breast size because the risk associated with fat, though significant, is lower than the risk associated with fibroglandular tissue. Consequently women with a smaller amount of dense tissue have a lower risk than those with more dense tissue for the same breast size.

Dr Carla van Gils, from the University Medical Centre Utrecht, who lead the research explained, "Fat tissue is known to produce the hormones such as oestrogen which are known to promote the growth of ER positive cancer. However it seems that it is the local fat tissue which is important to breast cancer risk at not just general body fat (as measured using BMI). Consequently it may be important to consider both types of tissue when assessing breast cancer risk."

Study Casts Doubt on Hot Dogs' Link to Colon Cancer (HealthDay)

MONDAY, Oct. 24 (HealthDay News) -- A U.S. government requirement that vitamin C or one of its close relatives be added to hot dogs, to reduce the amount of nitrites found in this popular food, may not have lowered the rate of colon cancer cases after all, a new study suggests.

Back in 1978, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration mandated that the meat industry include vitamin C (ascorbate) or its close cousin, erythorbate, in hot dogs to offset the amount of nitrites. Nitrites are added to cured, processed meats such as hot dogs to enhance their flavor and color, and to extend their shelf life. The problem is that during the cooking process, nitrites combine with amines in meat to form cancer-causing nitrosamines.

Since vitamin C was added to hot dogs, the researchers found that there has been a sharp drop in the number of people who die from colon cancer, but the incidence of colon cancer has not changed that much.

The findings were presented Monday at the American Association for Cancer Research annual meeting in Boston.

"The amount of nitrites in hot dogs were reduced as a result of these changes," said lead researcher Dr. Sidney Mirvish, professor emeritus at the Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. But, "if it were true that these changes reduced risk for colon cancer, it possibly should have been evident by now," he said. "It's not."

Dr. David Bernstein, chief of the division of gastroenterology at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, N.Y., said that the decrease in death rate from colon cancer was likely due to earlier detection and improved treatment, not changes in the nitrite content of hot dogs.

"The hot dog issue is a tough one to study," he said. "Not everyone eats a ton of hot dogs, so it is a difficult risk factor to control for. Nitrites are probably bad and cause all sorts of problems, but colon cancer may not be one of them."

In a related study presented at the same meeting, researchers at Simmons College in Boston found that women who consumed diets rich in foods that increase blood levels of C-peptide may be at higher risk for colorectal cancer. C-peptide is a blood marker of insulin secretion.

In the study, women who ate high amounts of red meat, fish and sugar-sweetened beverages and consumed lower amounts of high-fat dairy, coffee and whole grains had a 35 percent increased risk for colorectal cancer, the study showed. Also, those women who were overweight or sedentary were more vulnerable to the cancer-causing effects of this diet. The researchers suggest that high levels of insulin may promote cell growth and multiplication.

While the study found an association between this kind of diet and colorectal cancer, it did not prove a cause-and-effect.

Because these studies were presented at a medical meeting, the data and conclusions should be viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Racing community pays tribute to Wheldon in Indy (AP)

INDIANAPOLIS ? The IndyCar community shed tears and shared laughs Sunday in tribute to two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon.

The 87-minute public memorial service brought together Wheldon's former teammates, close friends, former business associates and even his wife, Susie, attended.

Wheldon was killed in a fiery 15-car crash last week at Las Vegas.

In a video message from Wheldon's father, the family thanked fans and friends for offering notes their support. But much of the service was dedicated to story-telling.

Steve Jobs, Alternative Medicine and Cancer | Care2 Causes

Did alternative medicine kill Steve Jobs? This question has been circulating around the internet since the visionary co-founder of Apple died on October 5. Ramzi?Amri, a research associate at Harvard Medical School who says he has been studying the type of cancer Jobs had for a year and a half, has argued that the type of pancreatic tumor Jobs had was ?treatable? and that by initially relying on alternative medical treatments, he cut short his chances for survival. Others including?Brian Dunning in a post entitled ?A Lesson in Treating Illness have decried Jobs?s decision to treat a terminal disease ?with woo rather than with medicine.?

The publication tomorrow, October 24, of Walter Isaacson?s biography of Jobs could provide more information. In a Sunday evening?60 Minutes interview, Isaacson has said that Jobs came to regret his initial decision to treat a?neuroendocrine tumor in his pancreas that was detected in 2004 with an alternative diet instead of medically recommended surgery. The Apple CEO ? ?so used to swimming against the tide of popular opinion? ? had been intrigued by Eastern mysticism as a young man and, according to an?ABC News report, ?believed in alternative herbal treatments.? An?AP report also says that Jobs ate a vegan diet and used ?acupuncture, herbal remedies and other treatments he found online, and even consulted a psychic.? He was also ?influenced by a doctor who ran a clinic that advised juice fasts, bowel cleansings and other unproven approaches .. before finally having surgery in July 2004.?

Orac,?a scientist who blogs at Respectful Insolence on ScienceBlogs, has long countered, and debunked, the ??woo? of alternative medical treatments with science. He has previously written about?Jobs?s 2009 liver transplant. In weighing the available evidence about whether Jobs?s ?flirtation? with alternative medicine might have killed him, Orac writes:

?it appears likely that Jobs did indeed decrease his chances of survival through his nine month sojourn into woo. On the other hand, it still remains very unclear by just how much he decreased his chances of survival. My best guesstimate is that, thanks to the indolent nature of functional insulinomas and lead time bias, it was probably only by a relatively small percentage. This leads me to point out that accepting that Jobs? choice probably decreased somewhat his chances of of surving his cancer is a very different thing than concluding that ?alternative medicine killed Steve Jobs.? The first statement is a nuanced assessment of probabilities; the latter statement is black-and-white thinking?

What is revealed from these accounts about Jobs?s initial treatment of his cancer with alternative remedies is that ?even someone as brilliant as Steve Jobs can be prone to denial, and, yes, even magical thinking.? It?s possible that Jobs could have had what Orac terms a ?medical reality distortion field that allowed him to come to think that he might be able to reverse his cancer with diet plus various ?alternative? modalities.??

Others have ?used the term??reality distortion field? in a ?part joking, part derogatory, part admiring? sense?to describe Jobs?s ?combination of personal charisma, bravado, hyperbole, marketing, and persistence? that enabled him to persuade and convince anyone, from engineers to Wynton Marsalis, about Apple products.?It?might be possible that the very qualities that enabled Jobs to make Apple and its products what they are ? to be the innovator the world will remember ?him as ? also contributed to his demise.?But with cancer, ?biology is king and queen,? and there is only so much we humans ? even visionaries like Jobs whose insights have radically changed our lives ? can do to fight that biology.

De mortuis nil nisi bonum. ?About the dead, say nothing except good.? What we can say is that, after those initial months using alternative treatments, Jobs sought out science-based treatments for his cancer and certainly the best available. It is commendable that, as Isaacson said on?60 Minutes, Jobs wanted to inform the world ?about his regret regarding his decision not to have been operated on sooner; about having made the wrong decision. How many public figures are willing to say that they have made a mistake?

Knowing this, I feel even more sorrow that Steve Jobs is gone.

World's first fat tax: what will it achieve?

Enviably healthy Denmark is leading the way in taxing unhealthy food. Why are they doing it, and will it work

THE Danish government's now infamous "fat tax" has caused an international uproar, applauded by public health advocates on the one hand and dismissed on the other as nanny-state social engineering gone berserk.

I see it as one country's attempt to stave off rising obesity rates, and its associated medical conditions, when other options seem less feasible. But the policies appear confusing. Why Denmark of all places? Why particular foods? Will such taxes really change eating behaviour? And aren't there better ways to halt or reverse rising rates of diet-related chronic disease?

Before getting to these questions, let's look at what Denmark has done. In 2009, its government announced a major tax overhaul aimed at cushioning the shock of the global economic crisis, promoting renewable energy, protecting the environment, discouraging climate change, and improving health - all while maintaining revenues, of course.

The tax reforms make it more expensive to produce products likely to harm the environment and to consume products potentially harmful to health, specifically tobacco, ice cream, chocolate, candy, sugar-sweetened soft drinks, and foods containing saturated fats.

Some of these taxes took effect last July. The current fuss is over the introduction this month of a tax on foods containing at least 2.3 per cent saturated fat, a category that includes margarine, salad and cooking oils, animal fats, and dairy products, but not - thanks to effective lobbying from the dairy industry - fluid milk.

Copenhagen is the home of Ren? Redzepi's Noma, voted the world's best restaurant for the past two years. To Americans, "Danish" means highly calorific fruit - and cheese-filled breakfast pastries. Despite such culinary riches, the Nordic nation reports enviable health statistics and a social support system beyond the wildest imagination of inhabitants of many countries. Danish citizens are entitled to free or very low-cost childcare, education and healthcare. Cycle lanes and high taxes on cars make bicycles the preferred method for getting to school or work, even by 63 per cent of members of the Danish parliament, the Folketing.

Taxes pay for this through policies that maintain a relatively narrow gap between the incomes of rich and poor. The Danish population is literate and educated. Its adult smoking rate is 19 per cent. Its obesity rate is 13.4 per cent, below the European average of 15 per cent and a level not seen in the US since the 1970s. Denmark has long used the tax system to achieve health goals. It has taxed candy for nearly 90 years, and was the first country to ban trans-fats in 2003.

Because its level of income disparity is relatively low, the effects of health taxes are less hard on the poor than in many other countries. But the Danes want their health to be better. Obesity rates may be low by US standards, but they used to be lower - 9.5 per cent in 2000. Life expectancy in Denmark is 79 years, at least two years below that in Japan or Iceland. The stated goal of the tax policies is to increase life expectancy as well as to reduce the burden and cost of illness from diet-related diseases.

Like all taxes, the "health" taxes are supposed to raise revenue: 2.75 billion Danish kroner annually ($470 million). The tax on saturated fat is expected to account for more than one-third of that. Since all food fats - no exceptions - are mixtures of saturated, unsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids, the tax will have to be worked out food by food. Producers must do this, pay the tax, and pass the cost on to consumers.

Taxes on cigarettes are set high enough to discourage use, especially among young people. But the food taxes are low, 0.34 kroner on a litre of soft drinks, for example. The "fat" tax is 16 kroner per kilogram of saturated fat. In dollars, the taxes will add 12 cents to a bag of crisps and 40 cents to the price of a burger. Whether these amounts will discourage purchases remains to be seen.

Other countries are playing "me too" or waiting to see the results of Denmark's experiment. Hungary has imposed a small tax on sweets, salty snacks, and sugary and caffeinated drinks and intends to use the revenues to offset healthcare costs. Romania and Iceland had such taxes but dropped them, whereas Finland and Ireland are considering them. Surprisingly, given his party's anti-nanny state platform, UK prime minister David Cameron is suggesting food taxes to counter the nation's burgeoning obesity crisis. The US has resisted calls for taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages, not least because the soft drink companies spent millions of dollars on defeating such proposals.

Leaving aside the usual criticisms, such as the impact on poorer people, I have a different reason for being troubled by tax interventions. They aim to change individual behaviour, but do little to change the behaviour of corporations that make and market unhealthful products, spending vast fortunes to make them available, desirable and socially acceptable.

Today, more and more evidence demonstrates the importance of food environment factors, such as processing, cost and marketing, in influencing food choices (The Lancet, DOI: 10.1016/S0140-6736(11)60813-1). Raising taxes is one way to change that environment by influencing the cost to the consumer. But governments seriously concerned about reducing rates of chronic disease should also consider ways to regulate production of unhealthy products, along with the ways they are marketed.

In the meantime, let us congratulate Denmark on what could be viewed as a revolutionary experiment. I can't wait to see the results.

Gadhafi's death helps clear way for oil exports

NEW YORK (AP) ? The death of Moammar Gadhafi removes a threat to the stability of global oil markets.

It will still be several months before Libya can export as much oil as it did before it descended into civil war earlier this year. But the killing of Gadhafi reduces the chance that violence will get in the way as Libya cranks up production again.

And as Libyan crude returns, it could lower the price of oil on the international markets and gasoline at American pumps.

The type of crude produced by Libya, known as light, sweet crude, is rare. It is especially valuable because it is easier for refineries to convert into diesel and gasoline. Many refineries can't switch easily to processing other varieties of crude.

Before the civil war, Libya produced only 2 percent of the world's oil. But even small interruptions in oil production can have a big effect on the price because the balance between supply and demand is delicate.

When fears arise that supplies might fall short, traders get nervous, and prices can go up fast.

The price of oil jumped 35 percent between Feb. 15, when protests started in Benghazi, and April 29, when oil hit almost $114 per barrel, the highest since 2008. Gasoline prices in the U.S. hit a three-year high of $3.98 on May 5.

High prices, plus the prospect that Libyan crude would disappear from the market for a long time, led a group of oil-importing nations to announce the release 60 million barrels of oil from emergency stocks. That included 30 million from the United States.

The price of oil came down because traders figured Libyan oil would return after Gadhafi was ultimately overthrown ? but also because of concerns that a worldwide economic slowdown would reduce demand for oil.

By Wednesday, oil had returned to its price before Libya's uprising began. It fell 81 cents Thursday to $85.30 a barrel in New York trading. The average price of a gallon of gas in the U.S. was unchanged at $3.47.

The oil market's reaction to Gadhafi's death was muted because efforts to revive the Libyan oil industry have been under way for months under the Libyan transitional government.

"It was a foregone conclusion that Gadhafi was finished," said Daniel Yergin, chairman of IHS CERA, an energy research firm, and author of a Pulitzer Prize-winning history of the oil industry.

Before the war, Libya, which sits on the biggest oil reserves in Africa, produced about 1.6 million barrels of oil per day. Production collapsed during the war. It now produces about 390,000 barrels a day, a Libyan official said earlier this month.

Analysts predict the country can produce 600,000 barrels per day by the end of the year and 1.6 million by the second half of next year. By then, oil, depending on where it is traded, could fall $10 to $25 per barrel, says Michael Lynch, president of Strategic Energy & Economic Research.

But getting back to regular oil production could prove difficult for Libya. Its government is still in its infancy. It has no parliament, no constitution and few remaining national institutions.

And infighting could spark a second uprising similar to the insurgency in Iraq, Barclays Capital analyst Helima Croft says.

"Certainly, having Gadhafi no longer on the scene takes away one source of instability. We just think the bigger problem might be the 'game of thrones' between various factions within the rebel ranks," Croft said.

One major issue is figuring out how to divide oil revenue among more than 100 tribes in the country, says Frank Verrastro, director of the energy and national security program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

International companies will also have to be reassured that a new government won't try to drastically change contracts that have already been signed. And they want to be assured that their oil-field engineers will be safe.

Still, Verrastro says, initial reports on the condition of Libyan infrastructure have been promising.

Already, major oil companies are working with the transitional government. Last week, an Italian company called Eni reopened the pipeline that runs natural gas from Libya to Italy for the first time in eight months.

In September, it resumed production at a Libyan oil field, and it is back to its full capacity of 70,000 barrels a day. And Eni and Libya's state-run National Oil Corp. aim to restart gas production in November from a platform 70 miles off the Libyan coast.

The Spanish oil company Repsol, however, isn't producing oil from its fields in the southwestern desert of Libya, where fighting was more intense. After Gadhafi's death, the company would not predict when production would resume. Repsol won't send its employees back to the fields until the company determines it is safe, says company spokesman Kristian Rix.

Hess Corp., which has a minority stake in one of Libya's oil fields, said it hasn't decided when to send employees back to the country. "Until we're certain that things have settled down there, we can't say when we'll get back to business," spokesman Jon Pepper says.

New Jobs Bill: President Needs to Stop Talking and Start Working (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | President Barack Obama is still preaching that Congress needs to pass the jobs bill even though they have made it clear to him that it will not pass even in the edited form. The political games over the jobs bill have been going on for almost two months now. As a former political consultant, I would suggest that the president do everything that he can to get parts of the bill passed as soon as possible instead of continuing to shift all of the blame for a failed plan on others.

The suggestion has been made about breaking up the jobs bill and trying to get it passed through in parts. Both parties have stated that there are aspects of the legislation that they both approve of such as improvement of certain areas of the infrastructure and particular tax breaks. As long as these parts were kept as is, they should pass through Congress without an issue.

This plan would help President Obama in many ways. First off, he would be able to show some type of progress to the American people. This could improve the portions of his approval rating that deal with his ability to create jobs. Next, he could show that he was finally taking an opportunity to reach across the political aisle. He would finally be able to make good on his greatest campaign promise. Best of all, he could finally have the steps taken towards getting people back to work.

With the continued occupation of Wall Street, and other locations around the country, President Obama could boost himself with even the smallest amount of legislation passage. He could spin the passage as something that was a gift to the occupiers and could improve his chances with younger voters. He could say that he was inspired to get the legislation passed as soon as possible by the messages of the movement.

If the president wants to have a chance of reelection, he needs to work with Congress to ensure that the jobs bill passes. Instead of wasting everybody's time with trying to intimidate Congress into passage, he should be sitting down with leaders and figuring out what concessions his bill needs to make. For once in his term, he needs to put aside his political games and work for us and not just himself.

A Restaurant, Dive Shop, And Bakery Share Their Groupon Experience (TCTV)

grouponWith Groupon reportedly set to begin its IPO road show early next week, it's a good time to revisit the deal site. Is Groupon a great, lucrative deal for its merchants, a swindle or something even worse? Rather than talk to analysts or observers, we decided to go directly to three Groupon merchants to find out if selling Groupons is a good deal. We picked 3 business in the San Francisco Bay Area that ran Groupons. A restaurant, a dive shop, and a bakery. We asked each of them to tell us how it went and whether or not they would sign-up again.
